The underwriter is a skilled professional on matters pertaining to underwriting, rate development and all other financial considerations. He/she evaluates risk, defines benefits and financial arrangements, computes and establishes initial and/or renewal rates or funding terms on cases with various financial arrangements and group insurance products. The underwriter must also be able to perform various related analysis including employee contribution strategies and long term cost projections with minimal supervision. This position works in tandem with an Account Manager or Producer on assigned accounts negotiating rates/fees/financial terms with vendors on behalf of clients. The underwriter verifies benefit levels, rates and the completeness and accuracy of financial terms and rate /fee arrangements. In addition to assigned case work, he/she must be able to assume project responsibilities when needed.
Bachelor’s degree from a four year accredited institution; or five years of related experience and or training.
Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence.
Experience working with PCs is required. Candidates must have experience in a Microsoft Windows environment including Word and Excel. Advanced Excel experience is preferred. Other system knowledge is helpful.
Ability to work as a part of a team – collaborating with both junior and senior members of the Benefits Department staff.
Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, compound interest, proportions and percentages and apply basic concepts of business mathematics and algebra in underwriting problems.
Ability to work effectively with deadlines is essential.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral written, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to define problems, to collect data, to establish facts and to draw valid conclusions.
