GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To support the overall communication functions of Justice and Local Church Ministries. The primary responsibilities are to manage the UCC Justice and Peace electronic network (JPANet) through weekly messaging, to manage the JLCM social media accounts and maintain justice-related pages on the UCC website. Provide technical support, written content expertise (digital and print) and data base management for Justice and Local Church program ministries.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work cross-departmentally within the UCC national setting and with ecumenical and interfaith partners to develop cohesive online communications strategy and serving as critical link to UC News department.
  • Work collaboratively with OPTIC to ensure brand consistency and optimal reach.
  • Oversee the Justice and Peace Action Network technical functions including:
    • Chairing meetings of the Justice and Peace Network editorial board
    • Editing content for electronic media and contributing to messaging strategy
    • Sending out action alerts, monthly newsletters, updates
    • Triage JPANet and Our Faith Our Vote email be forwarding to appropriate staff person, sending out requested materials and providing technical support to JPANet members
    • Sending targeted tiered actions
    • Tracking results of action alerts
  • Promote the Justice and Peace Action Network, recruiting new members, implementing procedures to grow the network through advertising/marketing strategies.
  • Analyze site statistics for justice webpages and the JPANetwork, including member surveys and alert statistics, to assist staff in messaging strategy to most effectively meet the needs of JPANet members.
  • Participate in online communications development campaigns, legislative email campaigns, supplemental advocacy campaigns which reinforce field organizing (i.e. Our Faith Our Vote campaign, CEO postcard campaigns, petitions…)
  • Organize online opportunities for field connections between constituents around legislative issues and support field organizing efforts with updated web content and posted resource materials.
  • Manage and maintain up-to-date web content and calendar, working with appropriate issue staff to ensure accurate and appropriate electronic content.
  • Utilize and experiment with new technologies to raise the profile of the UCC and to attract a more diverse audience.
  • Photograph and record public witnesses and major events as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • College degree in communications or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.
  • Understanding of the implications of online technology for the life of the church; ability to transform theoretical concepts and public policy issues into practical church and community mobilizing efforts.
  • Familiarity with a variety of social media platforms and database management.
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills. Including the ability to conceptualize and develop resources and edit electronic content for most effective messaging.
  • Ability to answer Justice and Peace Action Network (Janet) emails regarding tech and policy issues, triaging and forwarding to staff when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.
  • Professional experience in photography and videography.
  • Extensive familiarity with content management systems for web development (like NationBuilder, which we use) in addition to familiarity and facility with creating visuals using graphic design tools like canva.com or Adobe products.
  • Knowledge of the UCC and its public witness, polity and structure is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with public policy advocacy is highly preferred.
  • Occasional travel required.
