Job Summary:

The Photograph Archivist supervises the Photograph Processors and the Photograph Processor and Cataloger, oversees the collection management, arrangement, description, and cataloging of special photograph collections, and ensures that all standards are met.

Reports to: Head of Photograph Collections

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain records in InMagic and Adlib for new and existing acquisitions, collections, locations, and titles, as needed.
  • Assist the Head of Photograph Collections with collection management, including prioritizing, rehousing, locating, and deaccessioning as needed.
  • Supervise Photograph Processors and Photograph Processor and Cataloger, and oversee the processing of photograph collections.
  • Manage acquisition and processing of digital photographs for current films.
  • Act as the point person working with the Conservation Department to address the Photograph Archive's conservation and preservation needs.
  • Oversee digitization projects and catalog scanned images in Adlib, as needed.
 
Position Requirements
  • Completion of Master’s degree in Library Science, history or related field that includes emphasis upon archival science.
  • Bachelor’s degree in film studies, history, American studies, or a related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern archival theory, standards, and practices.
  • Working knowledge of current visual materials cataloging standards and processing standards for photographic and other visual materials collections.
  • Familiarity with collection management systems, digital asset management systems, and media asset management systems.
  • Knowledge of American film history, with broad awareness of major film artists.
  • Ability to communicate both simple and complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, to people with varying degrees of knowledge of archival theory and practice.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to climb ladders and lift and move moderately heavy boxes to and from high shelving.
