About the Organization KMHS is Kitsap's nonprofit, designated community mental health provider for adults with acute and/or chronic serious mental illnesses, and children with serious emotional disturbances and their families. During 2016, KMHS provided services to more than 6,800 children and adults.

Provide brief and on-going supervision, treatment planning, behavioral and therapeutic support for elementary aged students enrolled in the Port Townsend School District referred for In-School Assistance. Provide support to Port Townsend School District elementary schools around students’ behavioral and therapeutic needs.


  • Provide assessment, consultation, brief intervention, and collaboration for all elementary schools in the Port Townsend School District for students needing in-school assistance in their home school setting.
  • Provide skill building and brief counseling to students requiring additional support to maintain placement in their home schools. Refer families for additional services within KMHS or to other outside agencies as necessary.
  • Provide direct observation of children within their school setting. Participate in 1:1 interventions as necessary in order to encourage the children’s compliance with school expectations. Identify issues which impede the child’s successful social and emotional behavior and to help create a treatment plan that addresses these issues.
  • Provide immediate, therapeutic crisis interventions as necessary.
  • Collaborate with teachers, principals, administrators, other Port Townsend School District staff, and families to develop intervention plans tailored to the individual needs of the students referred for in-school assistance.
  • Facilitate and participate in all appropriate Port Townsend School District meetings, case consultations, family meetings, and admission/discharge planning meetings as necessary.
  • Work with the team to implement behavioral programs and intervention plans. Provide input into daily level rating forms.
  • Collect and track appropriate data according to each student’s individualized plan. Ensure that all paperwork is completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist program staff in providing a positive, structured, and therapeutic milieu in which the emotional, development, and educational needs of the children can be met. Work closely with team members to maintain an aesthetically pleasing and therapeutic environment.
  • Provide interventions for students in their home school environment as necessary. Collaborate with the student’s home school staff to develop behavioral programs and intervention plans. Assist team in assessing the student’s readiness to be in their home school environment.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of positive, collaborative relationships with KMHS programs, school district personnel, and other public or private agencies, in order to provide an essential level of care for children, and to further and enhance the overall mission and goals of the agency.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in counseling/psychology or related field preferred; minimum of two years’ experience in mental health, behavioral health, or psychology-related field and Bachelor’s Degree in a related field considered in lieu of a Master’s Degree. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Awareness of or working knowledge of Cognitive/Behavioral therapy, behavioral modification techniques, and understanding of child development preferred. Experience working with Special Education population strongly preferred. Educational or classroom management experience strongly preferred. Possess and maintain valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report and reliable, insured transportation.

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, use hands to finger or handle, reach with hands and arms, talk or listen. Requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. The position requires peripheral vision. The position may require working in outdoor weather conditions. A significant degree of flexibility and strength is required in this position due to the infrequent, yet essential, use of one’s limbs and body weight as a temporary means of physical restraint of some clients.
