Employment Specialist - Vocational

We are currently seeking an ACTT Vocational Specialist in Morganton, NC. This position is full-time, working Monday - Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. This schedule is flexible with occasional weekend and evening hours as well as On-Call 24/7 every 8 - 10 weeks. Ideal candidate should have experience working with persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses.

Position Summary:

The Vocational Specialist is required to participate in training in the evidence-based Individual Placement and Support Model (Drake, McHugo, Becker, Anthony, Clark, 1996), and should provide vocational services in a way that is consistent with all IPS model principles. This member of the multidisciplinary team has responsibility to carry out rehabilitation and support functions and assist in treatment; substance abuse services; education, support, and consultation to families; and crisis intervention under the clinical supervision of staff with professional degrees.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Engages the individual on the topic of school and/or work, particularly competitive employment, educating them about their opportunities and the benefits of working and school.
  • Completes a pre-vocational assessment that is focused on beneficiary’s strengths and preferences, and on-the-job assessments, where appropriate.
  • Conducts job development, where the vocational specialist builds relationships with local businesses and educates them about the services that the vocational specialist provides, collects information about positions, and, ideally, determines potential for job carving options.
  • Facilitates individualized job placement according to indiviual’s preferences, with a focus on competitive employment.
  • Collaborates with the NC IPS-SE Team for case consultation and other job development activities.
  • Provides job coaching and ongoing supports, assisting the beneficiary in learning the job skills, navigating the work place, managing work relationships with other employees and supervisor.
  • Provides benefits counseling directly, as well as connects beneficiaries to experts for more extensive benefits counseling as needed; this includes development of SSI/SSDI Work Incentives and NCMedicaid Buy-in: Health Coverage For Workers With Disabilities.
  • Facilitates the Person Centered Planning process for individuals assigned.
  • Serves as a consultant and educator to fellow ACT team members on the topic of evidence-based supported employment, which is the Individual Placement and Support (IPS-SE) model.
  • Provides case management for an assigned group of clients including coordinating and monitoring the activities of the individual treatment team.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for developing, writing, implementing, evaluating, and revising overall treatment goals and plans in conjunction with the Individualized Treatment Team (ITT)
  • Provides individual supportive therapy and system management.
  • Ensures immediate changes are made in treatment plans as client’s needs change.
  • Educates and supports client’s families; and advocates for clients’ rights and preferences.
  • Participates in comprehensive assessment of psychiatric history (e.g., onset, course and effect of illness, past treatment and responses and risk behaviors), mental status, and diagnosis; physical health and dental health; use of drugs or alcohol; education and employment; social development and functioning; activities of daily living (e.g. self-care, living situation, nutrition, money management); and family structure and relationships.
  • Consults with community agencies and families to maintain coordination in the treatment process.
  • Provides on-call intervention covering nighttime hours and serves as a backup to evening and weekend staff.
  • Documents client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established methods and procedures.
  • Participates in daily staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings.
  • Participates in providing substance use and treatment services.

Psychiatric treatment and Substance Use treatment Services

  • Provides ongoing assessment of clients’ mental illness symptoms and clients’ response to treatment. Makes appropriate changes in treatment plans to ensure immediate and appropriate interventions are provided in response to changes in mental status or behavior which put clients at risk (e.g., suicidality).
  • Provides symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness symptoms. psychosocial rehabilitative interventions and case coordination
  • Provides direct clinical services to client son an individual, group, and family basis in the office and in community settings to teach behavioral symptom-management techniques to alleviate and manage symptoms not reduced by medication and to promote personal growth and development by assisting clients to adapt to and cope with internal and external stresses.
  • Provides multiple-stage individual and group treatment in the office and in community settings to develop a trusting relationship with clients so that they may more freely discuss substance use and its effect on mental and physical health and daily functioning. May participate in setting treatment goals and plans with clients to reduce or abstain from substance use and to learn replacement behaviors.
  • Coordinates with outside inpatient services to detoxify clients and establish linkage to outpatient treatment, self-help programs (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous), outpatient services, and residential facilities.
  • Participates in the provision of rehabilitation services.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a strong commitment to the rights and ability of each person with a severe and persistent mental illness to live in normal community residence; work in market jobs; and have access to helpful, adequate, competent, and continuous supports and services.
  • Skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships with persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses and respect for client rights and personal preferences in treatment are essential.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted, state appropriate driver’s license for the State of North Carolina.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Education Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related human service field with the minimum required full-time, post-baccalaureate accumulated MH/DD/SA experience with the population served or equivalent of education and required experience, as required in the service definitions.
