Sr. Naval Architect

The Columbia Group (TCG), a design engineering and technical services company that has a successful 50+-year history of providing the United States Military with engineering, design, acquisition, logistics management, fabrication, test and evaluation, information technology and financial management support services, is seeking a Naval Architect (Hull Systems). The Naval Architect will, under general supervision, apply knowledge of naval architecture to perform complex naval architecture analyses and prepare typical naval architectural deliverables in support of the design of ships, high-speed craft, service craft and other floating structures.

The successful candidate will work on a broad range of challenging projects; ranging from the restoration of historic vessels to the development of autonomous craft. Tasks include:

  • Works directly with stakeholders and project managers in the planning and execution of technical activities on complex projects related to vessel (ship) and technical product development. Employs experience, existing guidelines and instructions, guidance form experienced engineering supervisors and independent judgment to plan and accomplish task objectives. Assignments may require the development of improvements to current designs, techniques and procedures and/or innovative approaches.
  • Applies naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable U.S. Navy or American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Hull form and hydrodynamic performance, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance and powering estimates, propulsor design and performance including waterjet propulsion, appendage design, maneuvering analyses, seakeeping analyses, development of model test plans and observing and analyzing data from model tests or full scale trials;
    • Weight and stability analyses, including dynamic stability, development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments;
    • Concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization;
    • Design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters;
    • Structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads;
    • General arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.
Position Requirements

Required Education, Skills and Experience:

  • BS in Naval Architecture plus 10 years related experience; marine engineering experience in the task areas above may, in some cases, be substituted for a naval architecture degree
  • Knowledgeable in naval architecture standards, practices, and tools;
  • Ability to apply regulatory body rules, ship specifications, and other technical guidance to develop conforming designs and modifications to ships and craft;
  • Experience performing complex analyses of hull forms to include predicting hydrodynamic performance, seakeeping, and scaling model tests to full size trials;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform weight and stability analysis;
  • Experience performing concept design studies in support of Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) and requirements validation.
  • Experience with high-speed planning hull designs and related structural and dynamic stability issues is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully complete engineering designs and analyses with minimal guidance and assistance
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
