Description

DRNY is currently recruiting to fill the position of Advocate in our Brooklyn Office. The Advocate will engage in individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities. This position reports to the Program Director.

The Advocate performs a wide range of duties, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Advocate to ensure NYS voting programs are accessible and provide people with disabilities a private and independent opportunity to vote in federal, state, and local elections.
  • Analyze new and existing advocacy strategies to address systemic issues to accessible voting.
  • With input from the Program Director, formulate strategies for addressing and/or resolving systemic issues around voting access.
  • Consult with people with disabilities, family members, advocacy groups, and others to identify barriers people with disabilities face when voting and identify strategies to address such barriers.
  • Conduct interviews, identify issues, determine a course of action, develop and implement advocacy strategies, negotiate solutions to problems, and, when appropriate, promote self-advocacy.
  • Act in accordance with identified Priorities and Goals of the Program.
  • Participate on task forces, coalitions, and committees.
  • Develop appropriate materials and conduct training and outreach activities.
  • Keep informed of national trends in voting advocacy strategies, technology advances, and best practices when advocating for voters with disabilities.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential files documenting advocacy services provided.
  • Assist in preparing reports for public review and to funding sources.
  • Timely open and close case and project files, maintain accurate timekeeping, prepare timely expense reports, and perform other administrative duties.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with skills, abilities, and general responsibilities as required to support DRNY.
  • Be available to travel throughout New York State and outside of New York State as necessary to perform assigned job tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Strong research skills;
  • Ability to provide education and training to large groups;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Strong relationship building skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong problem solving skills;
  • Outstanding professionalism and ethical judgement;
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals;
  • New York State driver’s license preferred; and
  • Ability to independently travel to offsite locations within NY to facilitate site visits, organization outreach, and conduct voting access advocacy.

Working Conditions

An Advocate usually performs work in an office environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take an Advocate to non-standard workplaces. An Advocate will be expected to travel within and outside the state as necessary.
