Wage Progression: Initial Step is currently $12.69/hour with annual step increases based upon hire date and the bargaining unit agreement in effect at the time of the anniversary date. Current steps: Step 2 is $13.11; Step 3 is $13.53; Step 4 is $14.81; Step 5 is $15.25; Step 6 is $15.56; Step 7 is $ 15.87; Step 8 is $16.35.

General Purpose of the Job:

Engages guests in the Packrat Playhouse, a new hands-on, minds-on exhibit area for families with young children. Greets and orients guests to the exhibit and presents programs for families, children and the general public. May assist with other department needs, such as greeting school groups, or preparation for school, camp and teen programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • The primary responsibility of this position is to orient, engage and educate guests in the Packrat Playhouse exhibit via a variety of programming (informal, paid, unpaid, scheduled, spontaneous, birthday parties, etc.)
  • Assists with evaluation of Packrat Playhouse exhibits and programming by collecting survey data
  • Services exhibit areas, keeping supplies stocked and clean
  • Assists with other department needs when possible, including greetings and orientations for school groups, and preparation for school, community and teen programming
  • Will handle live animals (arthropods and reptiles) and Museum artifacts for educational presentations in the Packrat Playhouse
  • Over time, will learn and contribute to new programs
  • Maintain records of attendance and animal handling
  • Able to work most weekends and Saturday evenings in the summer

Position Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree in science, education or closely related field, or equivalent experience
  • Must be able to obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Experience working with children (including volunteer work, babysitting)

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience working with animals
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Experience teaching, especially early childhood education
