About the Organization KMHS is Kitsap's nonprofit, designated community mental health provider for adults with acute and/or chronic serious mental illnesses, and children with serious emotional disturbances and their families. During 2016, KMHS provided services to more than 6,800 children and adults.

Perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep building equipment, mechanical equipment, or the structure of a facility in good repair. The primary responsibility is that of a painter with other duties that will involve maintenance plumbing; carpentry; drywall; repairing and maintain mechanical equipment; installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prep area to be painted for dust control
  • Make on-site preparations such as scaffolding, covering fixtures
  • Install drywall in maintenance applications
  • Prepare walls and other surfaces for painting by scraping, using sandpaper, removing old paint etc.
  • Fill cracks and holes with appropriate material (e.g. plaster)
  • Tape, mud, and finish drywall with professional results
  • Paint windows, doors, walls, woodwork, plaster, drywall, and other parts of building structures.
  • Mix paint and other materials to prepare the right color or texture

  • Paint surfaces according to instructions with various tools
  • Apply varnish and other finishes
  • Take and adhere to all health and safety precautions
  • Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.
  • Diagnose simple mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  • Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Performs light carpentry duties framing with wood or metal.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building equipment continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools, and reassemble equipment.
  • Estimate repair costs.
  • Fabricate and repair counters, benches, partitions.
  • Inspect drives, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, and perform other maintenance actions, following checklists.
  • Order parts, supplies, and equipment from catalogs and suppliers.
  • Record maintenance and repair work performed and the costs of the work in a Computerized Maintenance management System.
  • Use tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices.

Position Requirements

Knowledge and Skills
Requires basic knowledge of painting techniques. Requires basic knowledge of building, grounds or equipment maintenance, sufficient to perform routine maintenance and repair tasks. Requires knowledge of the use, maintenance and minor repair of the various tools and equipment used in building maintenance, remodel, and repair work. Requires basic knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques. Requires working knowledge of rough and finish carpentry techniques, commercial painting, window glazing, and framing. Requires working knowledge of safety rules and regulations. Requires sufficient arithmetic skills to compute distances, angles, quantities, and measures. Requires sufficient human relations skill to work as a cooperative member of a team and to serve internal customers.

Must be able to perform all of the essential duties of the position. Must be able to work as a member of a crew and maintain harmonious work relationships. Ability to perform both the preparation and application functions of a variety of assigned painting duties. Must be able to complete routine maintenance tasks. Requires the ability to read, understand and interpret work schedules and diagrams. Requires the ability to understand written and oral instructions. Must be able to make straightforward arithmetic calculations for distance, angle, and quantity. Requires the ability to work variable schedules to facilitate efficient project completion and special events. Requires the ability to observe safe work practices and handle hazardous materials according to accepted procedures. May require the ability to perform work assignments on varying schedules.

Physical Abilities
Requires the ability perform work of an active nature; to stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) heavy weights of up to 75 pounds on a regular basis. Requires the ability to push, pull, and guide materials over 75 pounds. Requires the ability to climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate specialized equipment and read technical (including blueprints) and safety information. Requires auditory ability to hear machinery sounds and alarms. Requires near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, moving objects, and observe work-in-progress. Requires speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations. Requires the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions.

Education and Experience
High School diploma/GED strongly preferred as demonstrated by arithmetic, reading, and writing skills sufficient to understand safety instructions, read and document work orders, read plans and drawings, make measurements, plus 2 years of experience in the general maintenance and remodel of buildings, grounds or equipment.

Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid Driver’s License.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions where significant safety considerations exist from full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to-heavy weight materials.
