Provide supervision and training for Psychiatric Aides while overseeing a range of administrative and clinical activities in support of running a safe and therapeutic milieu. Ensure Psychiatric Aides maintain appropriate training and licensure according to KMHS policy and associated WACs. Work collaboratively with staff in carrying out client treatment plans and objectives from time of admission to discharge.


  • To supervise Psychiatric Aides in their work including but not limited to training, coaching, evaluating and disciplining with regard to: a) completion of assigned tasks and associated paperwork, b) the use clinical skills during client interactions and documentation, c) professional communication, d) the use of ProFiler and email, e) additional tasks as assigned to the Psychiatric Aide, and f) meeting all expectations otherwise not specified.
  • Provide regular individual supervisions with Psychiatric Aides. Document and keep confidential records of supervisions and other significant interactions (i.e., issuing disciplinary actions, presenting performance appraisals). Provide ongoing Psychiatric Aide individual training and coaching as needed with regard to specific staff performance, areas of improvement and training goals.
  • Complete Psychiatric Aide performance appraisals within agency standards and timelines.
  • Take the lead in ensuring on-call Psychiatric Aides are oriented as indicated in the appropriate Orientation Checklist.
  • Promote the enhancement of positive staff morale by facilitating a timely response to concerns, ensuring respectful and professional internal communications, facilitate team building, and providing opportunities for staff recognition.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of milieu acuity and client risk, collaborating in a timely manner with staff as needed to ensure effective de-escalation and use of least restrictive alternatives up to seclusion and restraint.
  • Take the lead in organizing physical interventions with clients as needed; collaborating with the Nurse, assembling staff, directing actions, ensuring safety of staff and clients. Participate in physical interventions as needed. Facilitate post incident debriefings.
  • Oversee client admissions from initial intake to client arrival, collaborating with staff and outside agencies as needed to ensure admission criteria are met, all required documentation is completed, all appropriate policies and procedures are followed and all precautions are taken for the health and safety of clients and staff.
  • Ensure adequate Psychiatric Aide staffing per shift according to the appropriate protocol to include additional staff as needed based on client individual needs. Follow the established protocol for determining additional staffing and working with the appropriate staff to make determinations regarding adequate staffing.
  • Monitor and plan the use of unit resources to be within budgetary guidelines especially those related to unit activities and extra staffing. Provide input and assist the Clinical Supervisor and Program Manager in budget matters as requested.
  • Conduct regular chart audits for current census to ensure compliance with all relevant WACs.
  • Maintain a familiarity with unit policies and procedures and work collaboratively with the Clinical Supervisor and Program Manager to address updates and revisions as necessary.
  • Maintain familiarity with unit operations, policies and procedures for Youth Inpatient Unit and Residential Services in order to provide leadership and support on an as needed basis.
  • Keep current on all required documentation (i.e., food handler's permit, counselor licenses, etc.) and attend all mandatory agency trainings.
  • Attend regular Shift Supervisor meetings as indicated by the Clinical Supervisor.
  • In collaboration with the Nurse, facilitate Passdown; ensure that it starts and ends on time, provide relevant client and milieu information (i.e., clinical, safety, administrative) to oncoming shift.
  • Review Treatment Team notes, Communicate and follow-up on special assignments and treatment plan information as indicated by Treatment Team. Update all relevant communications.
  • Update all relevant communication venues, including but not limited to boards and census on a continual basis to assure continuity of care and available resources.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for an array of clinical and administrative needs including but not limited to individual Psychiatric Aide supervisions, disciplinary actions, clinical charting, staffing and human resource requirements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion and distribution of various agency documents such as staff time sheets, incident and staff accident reports, emergency response evaluations and other agency documents.
  • Assist Clinical Supervisor, Program Manager or KMHS Administration with any other responsibilities appropriate to the position and not specifically listed in the job description.
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A Master’s Degree in psychology, social work or a related field with two years experience providing direct service to persons with mental illness is preferred.  In lieu of a Master’s Degree, candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree and significant, relevant clinical experience may be considered, or any combination of education, experience and demonstrated clinical competence providing the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  Basic computer skills required.  Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Inpatient work experience, supervisory experience, teaching ability, and proficiency in MS Word preferred.

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS:  While performing the duties of the job the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, ascend and descend stairs, talk or listen in normal conversation levels and lift up to 50 pounds.  A significant degree of flexibility and strength is required in this position due to the infrequent, yet essential, use of ones limbs and body weight as a temporary means of physical restraint of some clients.  This position also requires peripheral vision and may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
