Fire Protection Engineer

Under general supervision, performs engineering design in the specialized field of fire science, protection and prevention. Responsibilities will include fire sprinkler design, smoke modeling and hydraulic modeling. Works closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers and Senior Engineers.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  1. Applies standard techniques and procedures in the design of fire sprinkler systems, including hydraulic analysis, drawings and specifications for systems in commercial buildings.
  2. Interfaces and provides direction to CAD/Design staff to produce permit documents in 3 Dimensions using AutoCAD CAD MEP or Revit.
  3. Requires a working knowledge of the International Code Council codes and National Fire Protection Association Standards and Guidelines.Requires the development of a working knowledge of local codes in multiple jurisdictions across the western United States to support specific project efforts.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in fire protection engineering from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university and years’ experience in the fire protection industry.
  • Prior work experience as a Fire Suppression/Fire Protection contractor preferred.
  • Water-Based System Layount NICET Level II certification preferred.
  • Certification as an EIT preferred.


  • Building fire codes and standards.
  • National Fire Protection Association Standards and Guidelines
  • Fire Suppression Systems Design, including water-based and advanced suppression systems.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of Manual and Automatic Fire Alarm Systems and Fire Detection Systems
  • Fire suppression system computer generated hydraulic calculation software
  • Ability to positively contribute to the dynamic Swanson Rink team environment and its industry leading position
  • Displays proficiency in use of word processing and spreadsheet software, and computer assisted engineering and design software to perform engineering tasks
  • Able to apply theoretical knowledge to achieve cost-effective, constructible design solutions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively; to express ideas; to share information; and to prepare clear, well-organized correspondence, reports and similar documents.
  • Developing ability to make presentations to clients, and/or in front of groups
  • Demonstrates ability to resolve conflicts effectively and to develop creative problem-solving strategies
  • Knowledge of fundamental business principles and practices, e.g., chargeable versus billable time, invoicing procedures, chargeable expenses, cost versus billing rate and profit margins
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The work environment is what one would expect in a typical office environment. Physical Demands

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
