Description

YOUR ROLE:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you are an experienced engineer responsible for leading projects in the design of mechanical systems for various project building types, including load analysis, equipment sizing, ductwork sizing, and design of hydronic, plumbing, and fire protection systems. You have a thorough understanding of all engineering tasks associated with system selection, evaluation, and design. You will manage, plan, and direct a mechanical team for project design and delivery.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Leadership

  • Ensure the overall design intent of the project established by Performance Based Design process is incorporated into the detailed documentation.
  • Provide extensive expertise in the technical aspects of the mechanical design including code compliance, specifications, system integration and constructability.
  • Resolve complex technical issues, ensure integration of disciplines, and provide strategies for meeting aggressive schedules and budgets.
  • Attend interviews for new projects as well as interviews for potential staff.

Management

  • Attend site-visits to resolve issues encountered in the field such as unforeseen conditions, code issues, and interpretation of construction documents.
  • Provide quality assurance/quality control measures for all projects.
  • Foster and maintain a collaborative professional working relationship with all the various disciplines.

Staff Development

  • Mentor, train, and direct the work of less experienced staff.
  • Provide technical support and project communications to team members.

Project Quality

  • Provide design analysis consistent with Progressive AE standards.
  • Coordinate the work of the mechanical design team through the schematic design development and construction document phase of a project. Review completed reports, submittals, drawings, estimates and calculations for accuracy.
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance.
  • Conduct work sessions or meetings at project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Determine and promote the best use of design software/technology, including Revit, AutoCAD, BSD Speclink, Trane Trace, and other emerging technologies, for presentation and production purposes.
  • Prepare building models, detailed contract documents, construction documents, load analysis, equipment sizing, ductwork sizing, hydronic system design, and specifications consistent with Progressive AE’s standards.
  • Coordinate workload to complete the documents on schedule.
  • Coordinate technical components of projects with other internal disciplines and outside consultants to ensure that conflicts do not exist in the documents.
  • Coordinate and assist with affected disciplines that have any addendum requests for information, change proposal requests, and/or change orders and is responsible to incorporate agreed upon changes into the project documents.
  • Regularly communicates with Project Manager(s), Project Designer(s) and/or Project Architects(s) to understand any changes to project design, scope, schedule and budget. Complete work in a timely manner and alert team members when a change in scope of work changes.
  • Provide control strategies for project budget overruns.
  • Attend scheduled team meetings and be an active participant.
  • Coordinate use and track shared electronic documentation and files with internal and external project team members including clients, contractors, and consultants.
  • Lead team meetings and activities including ‘Lessons Learned’ sessions.
  • Act as an ambassador for company-wide values and ethical standards of practice.

Financial

  • Prepare engineering proposals. Provide input on anticipated complexity and hours needed to complete work in order to help general proposals for new work.
  • Monitor budget and schedule. Provide control strategies for project budget overruns.
  • Develop strategies for overseeing and producing contract documents that are efficient and consistent with the scope of work, schedule and fee allotted to complete the work.
  • Identify and work toward solutions when inconsistencies occur as they relate to design and documentation.

Position Requirements

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited engineering program.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant mechanical system design, including load analysis, equipment sizing, ductwork sizing, hydronic system design, plumbing design, fire protection design, and gas design with a wide variety of project types preferred.
  • Licensed professional engineer (PE) in Mechanical. Multiple state licensure preferred.
  • Knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD required. Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook required.
  • Advanced knowledge of sustainability, utility company incentives, and state and federal rebate and tax incentive programs for energy use reduction strongly preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate and integrate work with designers, other engineers, construction administrators, consultants and any other members of the project team. Ability to oversee and work effectively with project team members evidenced by positive project results and outcomes.
  • Advanced knowledge of the production of construction drawings and specifications.
  • Advanced knowledge of quality assurance/quality control processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical standards, regulations, and building codes across various states in which Progressive AE works, and the ability to research and apply/incorporate into technical documents.
  • Ability to work independently and manage large, complex tasks and assignments with discipline team members. Ability to successfully prioritize work, manage multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines. Ability to drive other less experienced team members to meet the same goals. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Comfortable working under pressure in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to communicate professionally to people both internally and externally within all levels of the organization(s) they represent, including participation in interviews.
