Description

The Supervising Attorney will provide supervision and support to program staff, coordination of program activities, and assistance with the administration of the state-wide program. The Supervising Attorney will also provide direct legal services and engage in individual and systemic representation and litigation on behalf of individuals with disabilities. This includes addressing allegations of abuse and neglect and using litigation and other advocacy tools to assure compliance with federal and state laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.

The Supervising Attorney performs a wide range of duties, including the following:

  • Supervise program staff including assigning intakes, reviewing of work product, assisting with the preparation for direct representation, and project and case management;
  • Develop working relationship with newly hired program staff;
  • Oversee mentoring and training of program staff in monitoring, investigations, litigation, project management and development of litigation skills;
  • Monitor progress on projects and client service requests and provide guidance to ensure quality, timeliness, and motivate team members to lead and explore creative strategies;
  • Provide constructive feedback to program staff and develop and implement steps to address performance issues in consultation with the program director;
  • Model efficiency, organization, best practices, ethics, and professionalism and engage staff in areas of professional growth;
  • Provide direct legal services and engage in individual and systemic representation and litigation on behalf of individuals with disabilities;
  • Represent DRNY, the program, and the Director internally and with outside entities;
  • Cultivate useful relationships with relevant outside entities;
  • Assess professional interests and goals of program staff and cultivate work opportunities for staff to achieve goals and develop professionally;
  • Address client concerns regarding handling of their cases by program staff;
  • Communicate timely with Program Director for cohesive program management on staff and program concerns including proposing and implementing solutions;
  • Promote and work with the Director to develop and implement program priorities and goals;
  • Respond to program and Program Director priorities, guiding staff in changes, and offering creative solutions to meet Program Director and program needs;
  • Review and edit documents produced by program staff;
  • Provide legal support for DRNY colleagues when consulted in an area of expertise;
  • Supervise investigations of abuse and neglect;
  • Analyze new or existing cases as well as other matters to determine if they present systemic issues which may be appropriate for DRNY to address;
  • Independently formulate strategies for the prevention, reduction or elimination of systemic issues;
  • Draft investigative and monitoring reports and support program staff in doing so;
  • Implement the Human Resources policies, procedures and practices of the organization;
  • Monitor state and private facilities and service providers for abuse, neglect and compliance with federal and state laws protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities;
  • Lead task forces, coalitions, and committees as assigned, as well as conduct training and outreach activities;
  • Assist with development of CLE programs for DRNY to train within and outside DRNY;
  • Prepare or assist in preparing reports, including annual Performance Progress Report; and reports to funding sources;
  • Maintain accurate time records and client records;
  • Offer feedback and resolve conflict constructively;
  • Perform other related and requested tasks consistent with skills, abilities, general responsibilities as required to support DRNY, and other duties as assigned;
  • Travel throughout New York State and outside of New York State as necessary to perform assigned job task.

Qualifications

  • Member in good standing of the New York State Bar (or ability to gain admission within a reasonable time), and maintain such standing throughout employment with DRNY;
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, including demonstrated litigation experience;
  • Experience managing complex cases, projects, and systemic litigation;
  • Experience in public interest or civil rights law;
  • Excellent editing skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Experience training, mentoring, and managing others;
  • Prior experience developing priorities and achieving goals;
  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong problem solving skills;
  • Outstanding professionalism and ethical judgement;

Working Conditions

The Supervising Attorney usually performs work in an office environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take the Supervising Attorney to non-standard workplaces. This position is based in Rochester, NY.

The Supervising Attorney will be expected to travel within and outside the state as necessary and is a legal advocate for individuals with disabilities.The Supervising Attorney will provide legal services and engage in individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

This position reports to the Program Director.
