Limits of Authority:

Able to implement, with little supervision, the standards mandated by Head Start Program Performance Standards and Community Care Licensing.


Overall responsibility for the daily cleaning of a Head Start center.

Assist in achieving the agency's vision, 'For Those We Serve,' by empowering individuals who thrive as healthy, self-sufficient and contributing members of our communities.



  1. Empties, cleans and sanitizes trash cans. Replace liners.
  2. Sweeps and mops floors in classrooms, office areas, bathrooms, entry ways and kitchens (where applicable).
  3. Spot cleans and vacuums all carpets daily.
  4. Refills dispensers (soap, paper towels, toilet paper, toilet covers, etc.)
  5. Spot cleans walls to remove food, smudge marks, etc.
  6. Sweeps walkways in front of doors.
  7. Picks up trash, debris etc., discarded on grounds.
  8. Cleans and sanitizes sinks and toilets in both staff and children's bathrooms daily.
  9. Cleans classroom and children's bathrooms between A.M. And P.M. classes.


A. Cleans and dust windows, sills, ledges, counters and other hard surfaces.

B. Removes spider webs.

C. Takes inventory of supplies and submit order request as needed to Center Director or Teacher Director.


  1. Sweeps cement areas around playground equipment daily.
  2. Conducts daily safety inspection/correction of buildings and grounds.
  3. Mows grass as needed.
  4. Removes weeds in a safe manner from the yard, playground, under the equipment and in the sand area at least once every week and more often as needed.
  5. Prunes small trees and shrubbery in the yard and on the playground as needed.
  6. Waters lawn/grass/shrubbery and maintains in healthy condition in accordance with local city regulations.
  7. Performs minor maintenance of sprinklers, such as replacing heads to keep them in routine working order


  1. Changes filters in heating/air conditioning units (ground units only).
  2. Replaces light bulb as needed.
  3. Performs emergency cleanups (spills, accidents, etc.)
  4. Removes debris from sand walkways, parking lots, etc. (as applicable).
  5. Washes all interior and exterior windows, as needed.
  6. Maintains storage of equipment and supplies.
  7. Sets up facility for meetings, as needed.
  8. Locks and secures premises as directed.
  9. Submits written reports and documentation as required.
  10. Strips, waxes and seals floors as directed (winter, spring breaks and summer).
  11. Adheres to the American With Disabilities Act. (ADA-2010), which prohibits discriminatory actions towards children and/or adults with disabilities. In particular, children with disabilities are enrolled in the classroom as mandated by Federal Law.

Maintains strict compliance with universal precautions in the classroom or during home visits and when administering first aid.

Maintains confidentiality of records and information on Head Start staff, children and families.

Travels for agency business using personal/agency vehicle.

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Works evenings and weekends as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. High School graduate or GED.


Four (4) years’ experience with general maintenance.

Must have highly developed ability to:

Make minor repairs.

Handle power tools used in waxing, stripping and yard maintenance.

Maintain facility as required by state and local codes.

Communicate effectively on a written and verbal basis.


Maintain a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, adequate auto insurance as required by State law. Proof of insurance will be required.

Physical examination and TB screening clearance and signed federal criminal record declaration are required within 7 days after employment

Immunized against influenza (flu), pertussis (whooping cough) and measles. The influenza vaccination must be obtained annually during flu season, August 1 through December 1. A person is exempt from the immunization requirements for the following circumstances:

1. The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician declaring that because of the person’s physical condition or medical circumstances, the immunization is not safe.

2. The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician providing that the person has evidence of current immunity to pertussis (whooping cough) and/or measles.

3. The person submits in writing declaration that he or she has declined the influenza (flu) vaccination. This exemption only applies to the influenza (flu) vaccine.

Fingerprint clearance under Title 22 regulations, and criminal record statement, background checks as needed, and reference checks are required prior to employment.

Former Head Start/Early Head Start parents preferred.

Employment in Head Start is contingent upon approval of the Policy Council.
