Coordinator - Aquatics & Safety

Definition and Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director - Fitness and Wellness, the Coordinator - Aquatics & Safety is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive program for ASI's aquatic facilities and oversight of safety programs for the recreational sports programs and Recreation Center facility. This includes oversight of a 50-meter recreational pool and a 5,000 square foot leisure pool, as well as direct supervision of the Lifeguard and Swim Instructor staff. This position works directly with ASI professional and student staff to develop and implement safety training programs for ASI staff and the campus community. Certain non-specialized Coordinator duties and assignments are fluid and are periodically reviewed and revised based on program philosophy, professional development, and staff needs.

Educational and Qualifying Experience, Skills, Licenses, Credentials

Educational/License/Credential Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university (8 years applicable experience may be substituted for educational requirement).
  • Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate or equivalent (AFO).
  • Current American Red Cross certification in the following: Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor and CPR-Professional Rescuer.
  • Current American Red Cross Instructor certification in the following: Community First Aid and Safety, CPR-Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguard Training.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum three (3) years experience, five (5) years preferred that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience coordinating recreation programs for students, preferably in intramurals, aquatics, informal recreation, etc.
  • Experience in budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Supervisory experience required.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Working knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • General knowledge of office methods, equipment, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written; strong public speaking ability.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff, students, faculty and others.
  • Demonstrated skills in group supervision/leadership.
  • Ability to gather and analyze complex data and situations in order to draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others on diverse teams.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of financial record-keeping methods, procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations as related to aquatic facilities
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of student personnel development and programming.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise Lifeguards and Swim Instructors.
  • Directly supervise the Student Manager -Aquatics.
  • Directly supervise Instructors of Aquatic Fitness classes and workshops.
  • Directly supervise Safety Instructors.
  • Facilitate meetings, conduct performance evaluations, establish goals, and monitor day-to-day operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Aquatics Programs

  • Develop and coordinate Aquatic Fitness classes and workshops (Masters, Stroke Analysis, and Scuba).
  • Develop and coordinate aquatic safety courses (Lifeguard training) for campus community.
  • Expand aquatic programming to maximize the facility to meet participant needs.
  • Ensure lifeguard staff are trained to the most current industry standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain systems to ensure safe conditions and equipment for staff/participants in pool areas.
  • Evaluate and assess frequency of use and quality of service.

Safety Programs

  • Develop risk management guidelines for all Recreational Sports aquatic facilities and recreational facilities.
  • Oversee and plan the First Aid/CPR certification programs/classes for ASI student and professional staff members.
  • Coordinate and implement First Aid/CPR certification classes for the campus community.
  • Facilitate quarterly safety audits and programs for ASI managed facilities. Responsible for program area risk management and facilitating Red Alert Program.
  • Serve on the ASI Safety Committee.

Fiscal Management

  • Prepare and monitor line item budgets for specific program areas.
  • Research, forecast and purchase equipment.
  • Prepare quarterly expense/profit/loss reports for program areas.

Student Development

  • Participate in the annual planning, orientation, training, and development of the Recreational Sports student staff.
  • Collaborate in the implementation of the quarterly Student Recognition events.
  • Responsible for conflict management regarding participant/customer concerns.
  • Conduct research in order to maintain progressive and innovative systems as they relate to campus recreation programming and student development.

Assessment

  • Develop and execute assessment of programs and/or services for areas of responsibility including, but not limited to, setting and implementing goals, evaluating outcomes, and ongoing enhancement.
  • Participate in the overall ASI assessment planning and goal setting.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Recreational Sports management team and coordinator team.
  • Represent ASI on committees as appropriate.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as necessary.
  • Ensure continuous professional development.
  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
