Koniag Technology Solutions (KTS) is immediately hiring an experienced Facilities Support Engineer to work at our client's site in Durham, NC. This is a direct, full-time position with our company. The hours are Wednesday-Sunday,12am-8:30am to include a 1/2-hr. non-billable meal break.

The Facilities Support Engineer will provide contractor support in the facilities management of the client’s raised-floor computer room environments. This support will assist the client in developing and implementing facilities for both mainframe and open systems. Duties include site preparation for hardware installations, de-installations, upgrades, configuration changes and modifications in support of the activities related to client projects--ODAR, Riser Panel, VOIP and the Data Center.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a client-sponsored HSPD-12 Suitability

Duties and Responsibilities

The Facilities Support Engineer will perform the following:

  • Provide on-site support of all racking, stacking and cabling of customer IT devices/hardware
  • Provide on-site assistance in the site planning and installation of equipment
  • Provide verification of newly installed power circuits and other site modifications
  • Provide assistance and support for the client’s existing raised-floor computer in the Data Center locations
  • Develop project schedules and planning documents, including coordination of vendors.

Duties include (but are not necessarily limited to):

  • Prepare the following guideline determinations:
    • cable requirements and lengths
    • optimum configurations and layout
    • space requirements
    • HVAC requirements and availability
    • power requirements and availability

  • Perform the associated electrical component of IT hardware installation. Must be able to maintain panel schedules, monitor electrical usage, identify imbalanced power phases, connect/disconnect IT hardware to available power and identify power requirements for new projects on an as-needed basis.

  • Provide on-site inspection of the following:
    • Electrical service (including panel loads, outlets, power requirements and grounding requirements)
    • Uninterruptible Power Supplies
    • HVAC requirements, including humidity levels and supplemental requirements for equipment, security and fire detection systems
Position Requirements

Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum 2 years Data Center experience in facilities engineering / electrical support / raised-floor environment.

Must possess and be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Proficiency in the installation of servers, routers, switches, etc. and all associated hardware; cable installation; and housing of equipment in cabinets (with primary emphasis on safety)
  • Ability to manufacture various cables on short notice with provided supplies
  • Ability to make full utilization of tools, both mechanical (hand tools, drills etc.) and electronic (meters, oscilloscopes etc.) to perform assigned functions
  • Knowledge of telecommunication links and data transmission modes, including all cable configurations
  • Thorough understanding of the setup and workings of a multi-platform environment, including knowledge of all types of mainframe equipment (i.e., Z9 Processors, different types of DASD and vendors, tape drives, T10k Silos)
  • Thorough understanding of power requirements and equipment connectivity via FICON directors, ESCON, Fiber, bus and tag

Must have experience with cleaning and splicing optic cabling.

Working Environment & Conditions

This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The work load may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must be able to read, perform simple math calculations and withstand moderate amounts of stress. The duties frequently require lifting or manipulating up to 100 lbs. without assistance or with the use of mechanical lifts; some equipment can weigh over 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
