Project Manager (The Empathy Project)

Woodland Park Zoo is currently seeking an Empathy Project Manager to oversee the implementation of grant-funded activities associated with The Empathy Project.

The Empathy Project builds on previous work at the zoo on fostering empathy, and is focused on

  1. Continuing to test and refine empathy measurement tools
  2. Understanding the intersections between animal welfare, perception of welfare, and empathy-based programming
  3. Building a learning community to disseminate findings and support iterative learning

The Empathy Project Manager will play a critical role in the zoo's ongoing efforts to build on its work in fostering empathy for wildlife. In addition to supporting the zoo's efforts to build a learning community, they will also set the groundwork for the future of empathy-focused initiatives at the zoo.

They will be responsible for the coordination of research and training activities, partnership management, and development of an empathy-focused learning community. They will be responsible for planning and logistics of the learning network needs-assessment, and design of the intermediary granting program. They will manage all grant-associated logistics including personnel travel, symposium organizing, workshops, meetings, etc.

The successful candidate for this position would be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling competing priorities. They will have a track record of managing successful projects on-time and within budget. This position requires an individual who is an effective communicator who has strong skills in developing and maintaining effective partnerships.

This position is currently funded for 2.5 years, and may be extended pending funding. The individual is expected to be an active member of fundraising efforts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage The Empathy Project grant to ensure smooth implementation of activities on time and within budget to satisfactorily complete project
  • Develop and maintain project timeline and schedule of activities to ensure zoo meets all outcomes and deliverables
  • Keep the relevant staff informed about upcoming deadlines and deliverables, thereby ensuring smooth completion of work responsibilities
  • Oversee grant staff to comply with job responsibilities
  • Schedule, organize, and participate in project meetings with project team and partners
  • Oversee grant budget including invoicing, accounting, reporting, and other administrative functions to ensure successful execution of grant process
  • Measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools and techniques
  • Ensure the development, implementation and evaluation of projects and programs
  • Provide regular written updates of project progress and activities to all relevant parties; work with grant writers to provide detailed reports to the funders
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation
  • Collate and write reports, publications and other communication materials
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and partners across departments and organizations
  • Travel to partner sites as necessary
  • Develop and strengthen internal and external partnerships; manage relationships with partners and stakeholders, as well as third parties/vendors as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will supervise grant funded staff. This position requires the ability to interact effectively with peers in cross-functional roles in order to be successful.

  • Excellent organization skills with experience in managing and supervising projects

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and listening skills
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and produce quality results on time with attention to detail

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Minimum Bachelor's Degree and 1-2 years of experience successfully managing projects or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient and experienced Microsoft Office applications; particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project (or other project management software). Must be able to work with customized databases and technology, and conduct Internet research.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to effectively present information to different audiences including (but not limited to) zoo management, public groups and donors.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to develop and manage multiple program budgets and prepare analytical reports.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The position requires an ability to walk or transit across the 92-acre facility in variable weather conditions. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and occasionally required to move between locations.
