Professional Training Program Developer

SUMMARY

Provide vision and leadership for research-based and engaging professional development in the Education Department at Woodland Park Zoo. We are looking for an individual with a passion for identifying, designing and implementing training strategies to build department and organizational capacity. This position will work in close collaboration with the Director of Learning and Engagement and VP of Learning Innovation to identify departmental performance gaps and opportunities and to develop, coordinate and facilitate training frameworks, plans, materials and activities for volunteers and staff within and outside the department and at all levels utilizing best practices in instructional design and technology. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and enthusiastic professional with experience developing, delivering and assessing trainings. Background in accessible/inclusive design; experience designing and delivering training for individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities; and the ability to speak a language in addition to English are all highly valued. There is one full-time, benefited position to be filled at this time. This position is currently funded through October 31, 2019, and may be extended pending funding. The individual is expected to be an active member of fundraising efforts. The initial focus will be on designing, refining, implementing and evaluating cross institution trainings on research based practices in building empathy and care for wildlife.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, coordinate, develop and facilitate effective and interactive training programs and materials to support employee development and department enhancement.
  • Oversee development and implementation of professional development training framework and plans including strategies for mentoring and on-going support of staff and volunteers
  • Leverage existing training partnerships within and outside the zoo and identify new strategic partnerships
  • Develop and manage training program budgets, materials, and financial records
  • Conduct regular assessments of department and personnel needs. Work with evaluators to develop evaluation plans for training initiatives and to collect and analyze assessment data. Modify future materials and trainings based on assessment findings
  • Advance the zoo's role as a model for professional development at informal science learning institutions
  • Coordinate with supervisors to schedule training sessions and programs to prevent excessive business interruption to schedule staff, interns and volunteers as needed to implement assigned training initiatives
  • Oversee training schedules, practice sessions, and resources as needed for project implementation ensuring that programs are delivered on time and according to project goals.
  • Manage project teams to develop and lead department wide and cross departmental training plans and programs. Support institution-wide training efforts through strategic planning, advice and practical assistance.
  • Under direction of Director and/or Vice President and with the assistance of the Development Department, write grants and grant reports and participate in donor cultivation tours, events and other fundraising initiatives
  • Collect and report statistics and prepare reports for staff, funders, partners, city and county government and others.
  • Research, write, design, develop, revise and disseminate program/project materials
  • Share project updates and outcomes at internal and external professional meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Familiarity with the methods and principles for designing programs to teach, train and instruct both groups and individuals, including the means of assessing the effects of training
  • Highly organized, detail oriented and efficient with excellent administrative and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders (staff, mangers, board, partners, volunteers, visitors, etc.)
  • Familiar with working in a multi-cultural environment and accustomed to working with people from a variety of backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and schedules in a fast-paced environment with multiple agendas
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting represent the department in cross departmental meetings to reach cross functional goals and the zoo's mission
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to listen, give and receive feedback in a productive and professional manner
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with high energy and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to anticipate needs and challenges, take initiative, ask questions, and provide solutions to achieve department objectives

  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, which may include weekends, some evenings and holidays

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Degree and/or certification in training development, or equivalent experience. A minimum of 2 years' experience designing, developing and delivering training and curriculum for adult audiences.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Washington State Driver's License preferred

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient and experienced with Microsoft Office applications; particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Must be able to work with customized databases and technology, and conduct Internet research. Experience developing multimedia content (video, graphics, interactive online materials).

CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS

Must be enthusiastic and customer service oriented and deal with clients in a courteous and professional manner. Enjoy working with the public including diverse populations and people of all ages and abilities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write grants, reports, speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The position requires an ability to walk or transit across the 92-acre facility in variable weather conditions with the possibility of entering non-public behind the scenes staff areas.
