Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Job Summary:

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner works closely with a multidisciplinary community-based treatment team supporting young adults with mental illness to successfully transition into adulthood. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides medication support services and diagnostic consultation, attends treatment reviews, prescribes psychotropic medication, and documents all services provided. Along with the rest of the team, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is active in supporting and implementing individualized, strengths-based, culturally competent, participant/family-centered approaches.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Direct Care and Intervention: 1) Provide psychiatric assessment and evaluation to participants in office, home, school, or other community settings. 2) Prescribes and is responsible for psychotropic medication treatment. 3) Determine need for additional medical evaluations and referrals. 4) Provides leadership in linking participants with physical health resources and providing health education. 5) Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, all information to and from team members related to participant care. 5) Participates in scheduled treatment planning meetings for each assigned participant. 6) Consults with other members of the participant's treatment team regarding participant's mental health issues, and may recommend service components to best meet each participant's individual needs. 7) Responds with flexibility to participant needs, providing crisis intervention and support during work hours and non-work hours as assigned.

Clinical Responsibilities and Competencies: 1) Completes thorough assessments when evaluating participant's needs and making recommendations for treatment. 2) Utilizes participant/family information and preferences, scientific evidence and clinical judgment to determine diagnostic and therapeutic decision. 3) Performs medication monitoring that meets the standards and quality for this position and competency level. 4) Provides participants a thorough presentation of risks, benefits, and alternatives to treatment (informed consent). 5) Provides effective counseling and education to participants and their families. 6) Applies knowledge to clinical problem-solving, clinical decision-making, and critical thinking. 7) Utilizes effective listening and interpretive skills. 8) Adheres to principles of confidentiality, scientific integrity, informed consent, and business practices. 9) Displays consistent sensitivity and responsiveness to a diverse participant population, including but not limited to diversity in gender, age culture, race, religion, disability and sexual orientation. 10) Shows respect for other members of the clinical team, management and support staff. 11) Fulfills assigned clinical responsibility (i.e. is reliable and available). 12) Communicates effectively with participant, family and external agencies as appropriate across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. 13) Collaborates with other members of the clinical team for the coordination and management of ongoing care.

Community Leadership: Acts as an emissary for FFYC in every community situation. 2) Participates in community committees and presentations as assigned.

Under the Supervision of an M.D.: 1) Provides psychiatric diagnosis and psychopharmacological assessment and treatment of routine, urgent, and emergent mental health problems. 2) Furnishes and dispenses medications (including controlled substances). 3) Orders laboratory tests and imaging studies. 4) Ensures ongoing collaboration with primary care providers and specialists in due course. 5) Provides referrals for specialty care/consultation. 6) Assesses, diagnose, and provides treatment of general medical conditions incident to psychiatric management.

Documentation/Administrative Duties: 1) Maintains participant records in an orderly and timely manner. 2) Ensures individual progress notes are well-organized and concise. 3) Utilizes the Electronic Health Record system (s) effectively to complete all clinical documentation. 3) Comprehends and meets all charting and billing deadlines. 4) Adheres to administrative and productivity goals (up to 65% depending upon program). 5) Participates in internal and community based quality assurance as assigned. 6) Verifies all aspects of documentation meet or exceed county, state and federal guidelines. 7) Meets all HIPAA standards in providing PHI to others.

Professional Development: 1) Participates in weekly supervision and group supervision meetings as assigned. 2) Maintains current certification with American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric /Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. 3) Maintains CPR/AHA BLS Certification. 3) Participates in trainings and provides training as assigned.

Compliance: 1) Maintains excellent professional boundaries and adheres to all professional ethical standards including abuse reporting, maintenance of participant confidentiality, exhibiting moral and ethical behavior. 2) Adheres to all agency and program policies including Boundary Code of Ethics, Core Competencies, Code of Conduct, Employee Handbook and state and federal regulations.


1) May drive on Agency business as required. 2) Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements



  1. Active, unrestricted CA RN license in good standing or an active, unrestricted CA NP Certificate (or Certificate Eligible) or a Master of Science or Master of Nursing degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  2. Successful completion of a graduate-level Psychiatric NP Specialty Program Accredited by the CA BRN (preferred); OR substantive clinical training. If graduated from a non-PNP program, individual will be supervised in their practice until deemed competent to function independently.
  3. Valid CA BRN issued Furnishing License (or able to obtain within 9 months of hire).
  4. Valid DEA Schedule II certificate (or DEA Number eligible) (or able to obtain within 9 months of hire).
  5. National Board Certification in Nursing required (or Board Eligible with testing for certification within 6 – 12 months of licensure or hiring, whichever is later).
  6. One or more years of experience in the specialty field of psychiatric nursing.
  7. Clean driving record; current CA driver’s license or ability to obtain within 10 days after hired.
  8. Basic computer and keyboarding competence with the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.
  9. Access to dependable transportation available and personal car insurance.


  1. Certification in Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing.
  2. Experience with team-based models for assisting young adults with significant mental illness to live in the community.

  3. Knowledge in philosophies of community psychiatry, evidence based practices (particularly ACT and Motivational Interviewing), recovery, resilience, family systems, and interdisciplinary team work, etc.

  4. Knowledge of theoretical and pharmacologic issues related to clinical treatment of common psychiatric disorders.

  5. Experience working with young adults utilizing strength-based therapeutic approaches.

  1. Fluency in prevailing language(s) of the community.

  2. Must be able to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
  3. Must be licensed and have the ability and skill to drive cars, vans, or other vehicles. May require driving up to 4 (four) hours at a time.
  4. Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies, and to learn and implement self-defense maneuvers, and to physically monitor youth to ensure they don’t hurt themselves or others. Job may be dangerous if the individual cannot assess and avoid threats posed by youth
