Job Summary:

The Automation Engineer will provide automation field services to Dowland-Bach customers. The Automation Engineer will travel to many destinations in Alaska to commission new control systems and to diagnose and repair issues with existing systems.

Essential Functions including, but not limited to: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.)

  • Control system field commissioning and diagnostics.
  • Instrumentation & control element commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Induction motor commissioning and troubleshooting including motors operated direct on line, with soft starters or by variable frequency drives (VFD).
  • Electrical control panel quality assurance testing.
  • Software Engineering.
  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) software validation, troubleshooting and implementation.
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) software validation, troubleshooting and implementation.
  • Network troubleshooting and configuration.
  • PC Hardware, Virtualization and Operating Systems.
  • Basic project management.
  • Maintain company standards for quality.
  • Exercise safe electrical habits.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and orderly shop and work area.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Ability:

  • Accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5 or more years’ experience in the duties and responsibilities described above.
  • Alaska PE License or the ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Knowledge of process control systems.
  • PLC programming experience.
  • Proficiency with Rockwell Automation programming software and hardware is preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Ability to travel within Alaska to customer sites for work including remote locations.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to work independently and interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Dependable attendance.
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to sit and review information on a computer screen for long periods of time (up to 12 hours a day with lunch and breaks).
  • Must be able to withstand repetitive motion up to 12 hours a day with lunch and breaks.
  • Subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • Must maintain a legal Alaska Driver’s License.
  • Ability to complete work at industrial worksites including rough and/or icy terrain.

Office Location and Travel:

This position is located in Anchorage, AK.

Up to 75% travel may be required, sometimes to remote destinations.

Working Environment & Conditions

This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. Travel for this position may include remote destinations and/or primitive living conditions. Incumbent may be briefly exposed to ambient temperature ranges of negative (-)60F to positive (+)110F due to extremes of Alaska Environmental conditions. Typical job duties may require the incumbent to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The work load may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent may occasionally be asked to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
