Description

The Youth Engagement Strategy seeks to provide meaningful ways for current Holland Bloorview clients to connect with older youth with disabilities to share lived experience and offer a peer connection. The Life Skills Youth Mentor will work in a variety of summer life skills programs with a range of clients. The life skills youth mentor will also work on projects and initiatives that are particularly relevant to teens and youth with disabilities. The life skills youth mentor will work with different teams, be supervised by the Youth Engagement Strategy Lead both at the hospital and in the community. This position is 30 hours per week, July 3 - August 17, 2018.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a peer role-model to clients
  • Share lived experiences of own participation in life skills programs
  • Share personal stories around school, work, volunteering and other topics that may benefit the clients on a 1:1 basis and in small groups (during workshops, and program free time)
  • Understand the overall life skills program goals as well the individual client's goals, and be able to support the client while demonstrating keen self-awareness and maintain personal boundaries
  • Facilitate client's participation in conversations and in social interactions with other peers
  • Support programs with preparation and clean-up activities
  • Act as a representative of Holland Bloorview and the Youth Mentorship Program to community partners and internal partners with excellent written and verbal communication
  • Communicate and meet regularly with teams you are working with
  • Other assigned duties

Qualifications

  • An individual with Lived Experience of disability or acquired injury
  • Current student enrolled in either a high school OSSD stream or post-secondary diploma or degree program.
  • Experience working with peers with physical disabilities and/or developmental delays
  • Successful completion of Holland Bloorview's Youth Mentorship Training preferred
  • Experience working in leadership roles with peers with disabilities
  • Must be willing to work hours according to program needs including evenings and weekends
  • Must be willing and able to travel to a variety locations across the GTA
  • Basic CPR certification - Basic Rescuer (C) certificate an asset
  • Is independently mobile
  • Demonstrates ability to be flexible, to assess the needs of clients and to respond quickly to needs
  • Demonstrates initiative and self direction to work independently at times
  • Demonstrates ability to organize time and manage working hours
  • Demonstrates ability to work in collaboration with staff/clients/families and community partners
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and excellent communication skills

Additional Qualifications

This position is funded through a government program, which creates summer job opportunities for students; therefore, eligible candidates must be:

  • Students between the ages of 15 and 30 (at the start of the employment)
  • Registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
