Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in training or education; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must obtain and maintain certification as a Georgia Fire and Life Safety Educator with Day Care Providers. (*Georgia Fire and Life Safety Educator with Day Care Providers is a post requisite through 2018; required effective January 1, 2019.)

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Description

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to plan and implement fire and life safety programs for the City.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Plans fire and life safety education programs and activities for the community: evaluates and develops educational goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, including program content, methods, and instructional materials and techniques; conducts research of fire and life safety issues and needs; analyzes research to evaluate develop or revise educational programs, materials and activities.

Implements fire and life safety education programs and activities for the City, including CPR training: organizes, schedules and conducts workshops and training sessions; provides the public with information; participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning and other fire education activities for other government agencies and the public; maintains materials, equipment and vehicles used for public education programs.

Develops and provides promotional materials and performs promotion activities: develops and provides press releases, audio-visual production, marketing, newsletters, media relations and related art work; conducts interviews with local and national media groups; maintains graphics and artwork for branding merchandise; collects bids and orders products such as specialized clothing, educational props and equipment.

Serves as the department representative for the Georgia Firefighter's Burn Foundation; plans and organizes fundraisers and events; assists with Foundation camps and fundraisers; attends meeting and events; distributes information regarding Foundation activities; monitors and distributes fundraising dollars; maintains related documentation.

Maintains inventory of materials and supplies: ensures availability of materials and supplies to complete work assignments; prepares requests for and/or orders materials and supplies; maintains related documentation.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including articles, smoke alarm installation requests, and training materials; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including monthly newsletter, training materials, and reports; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Operates or uses various equipment and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains a motor vehicle, fire safety house, 911 simulator, or other equipment; operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Communicates with supervisor, other employees, school administrators and teachers, home owners associations, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
