Executive Director, Pine Rest Foundation

The Executive Director of the Pine Rest Foundation leads, directs, and manages a comprehensive resource development program to advance the mission and goals of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services and the Pine Rest Foundation. The executive leader in this role supports the work of Pine Rest by enhancing relationships with internal and external constituencies (including patients, donors, volunteers, staff, administrators, physicians/clinicians, and community leaders) to increase overall involvement and fundraising outcomes. Leadership of the Foundation includes responsibility for the planning and execution of annual, major, and planned giving programs, corporate and foundation relations, campaigns, donor stewardship, and overall Foundation operations, as well as Director level oversight for the Rustic Market Thrift Store which is owned and operated by Pine Rest. The Executive Director must demonstrate excellent customer service and have enthusiasm about the program and the Pine Rest organization.

Principal duties and responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Serves as the principal architect of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services' philanthropic program and provides its primary leadership.
  • Serves as the Foundation's primary advocate and spokesperson in local and regional communities, as well as with pertinent national organizations and supporters, increasing awareness, understanding, and appreciation of Pine Rest.
  • Develops and implements strategic and annual plans for the Foundation in conjunction with the Foundation Board of Governors and Pine Rest President/CEO. Reviews and evaluates the results of programs and activities.
  • Ensures a moves management approach and dynamic processes in all phases of donor identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Maintains a portfolio of Pine Rest's highest capacity prospects, securing major and planned gifts, as well as leadership annual gifts. Creates and maintains successful relationships with donors and prospects.
  • Cultivates a strong working relationship with the Foundation Board, ensuring transparency, accountability, and open communication in the presentation and measurement of financial and fundraising goals and outcomes. Also effectively informs Pine Rest's Board of Directors of Foundation activities.
  • Integrates the President/CEO, Foundation Board, and other key leaders and volunteers into the fundraising process.
  • Develops and oversees Foundation communications and messaging. Works with Pine Rest's Marketing and Communications department, as needed, to ensure branding alignment and unified communications.
  • Develops annual measurable goals for a comprehensive resource development program utilizing focus areas such as annual giving (including employee giving), major giving, planned giving, special events, and campaign projects (including capital, endowment, and programmatic) to reach strategic goals. Advances a grateful patient initiative. Effectively manages and develops a Foundation team focused toward reaching these goals.
  • In conjunction with the Foundation Board, develops, reviews, and revises policies and procedures for the effective and ethical operation of the Foundation.
  • Directs all business aspects of the Foundation including formulating and administering the annual departmental budget and financial analysis, as needed and requested.
  • Oversees the Casey Wondergem Grant Program, an internal competitive grant process funded by the Pine Rest Foundation Endowment, ensuring that the Pine Rest community and Foundation Board has the information required to apply, evaluate, and approve an annual slate of grant proposals in a timely and efficient fashion.
  • Serves on Pine Rest's Executive Council and provides thoughtful and dynamic leadership in partnership with administrative colleagues to shape the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Remains aware of grant opportunities and effectively responds to them with requests and proposals. Works closely with Grants Management in this regard.
  • Ensures that donor directives, wishes, and confidentiality are upheld.
  • Maintains annual training and demonstrate competency in the required programmatic training.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Pine Rest Foundation staff
  • Oversees the Manager and activity of Rustic Market Thirft Store
Position Requirements

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field is required. Master’s degree and CFRE designation preferred.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years increasingly responsible and successful fundraising experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience working collaboratively and effectively with a nonprofit board preferred.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, management, and communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
  • Exemplary interpersonal abilities are essential, as is the demonstrated ability to build effective and collaborative relationships with a wide set of constituencies, both internal and external.
  • Ability to develop and execute complex business plans.
  • Computer skills required to manage fundraising and donor databases.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in all phases of Foundation work.
  • Serve as a model for lifelong learning and professional development.

About the Organization Pine Rest is a nonprofit, free standing, behavioral health system founded in 1910 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This comprehensive behavioral health center, coupled with the Pine Rest network of 18 outpatient clinics and satellite offices in Michigan and Iowa, provide individualized and group therapy for people of all ages and all levels of need. Pine Rest clinicians offer therapeutic services in behavioral health for people of all ages and all levels of need across the continuum of care within a Christian framework.

Pine Rest has a 198-bed inpatient hospital program with a 36-bed child and adolescent inpatient and a large partial hospital program for adolescents. Additionally, Pine Rest has many inpatient services for adults, including: four 22-bed adult inpatient units each designed for a different level of acuity, a 22-bed co-occurring substance use disorder adult inpatient unit, a large adult partial hospital program, and a 26-bed older adult inpatient unit.

The Pine Rest Community and Residential Services Division also provides a wide array of services. With over 220 residential beds across a variety of programs, including treatment for substance use disorders, homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disorders, adults with mental illness, and a program for youth aged 11-18 with extensive trauma histories focusing on trauma treatment and life skills programming.

The Pine Rest Behavioral Health Solutions Division partners with behavioral health and medical organizations to increase access to psychiatry services and to provide a continuum of behavioral health and telepsychiatry services throughout many communities across the State of Michigan.
