Community Cultural Outreach Specialist

OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Klallam Language Program Grant Manager the Community Cultural Outreach Specialist will manage the LEKT Song and Dance Group, Coordinate and Facilitate Quarterly Community Culture Classes, work with Culture and Language Staff to provide Cultural assistance during tribal events, intake and respond to all culture/language/history requests, coordinate annual LEKT Royalty Contest, work with tribal elders to document cultural/historical/language knowledge, annotate Klallam language sound files, and work towards tribal and WA state teacher certification.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: none

POSITION STATUS: 40 hours per week

SALARY LEVEL: $15/hour

WORK SCHEDULE: shift varies, mainly evenings and weekends

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Manage the LEKT Song and Dance group by 1)arranging practices and performances 2)advertising events in newsletter, on facebook and via text message to group members 3)facilitating events by budgeting, planning, shopping, setting up, cooking, cleaning up, facilitating, documenting attendance, teaching songs and dances and leading by example while providing a positive and welcoming atmosphere 4) transporting and chaperoning youth 5) arranging additional approved adult chaperones when needed 6)caring for song and dance group regalia, spears, paddles, masks, etc.

  • Coordinate Quarterly Community Culture Classes by budgeting, planning, preparing materials, advertising, facilitating, contacting and contracting instructors (if needed), set-up, clean-up, providing transportation and documenting attendance.

  • Work with culture and language program staff to ensure success of events such as community gatherings and classes, school and/or community presentations and/or events.

  • Intake all culture, language and history requests from community and staff then communicate about each request with supervisor to ensure a correct response or to delegate appropriately.

  • Coordinate annual LEKT Royalty Contest

  • Continue growth of the Culture Program by initiating innovative ideas for current or new programs for youth and/or adults.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings

  • Work 2 hours weekly with tribal elder to learn and document cultural, historical, and/or language knowledge.

  • Attend Klallam Language Immersion Culture Classes twice a week and assist in setting-up, cleaning-up, facilitating and teaching/speaking Klallam.

  • Annotate Klallam language sound files from previously recorded elder audio files for 2 hours weekly and extract then save sound clips.

  • Work towards Tribal and State Klallam Language Teaching Certificate by attending child abuse prevention course, continuing education in Klallam language, creating a Klallam language lesson portfolio and presentation and presenting to Klallam language certification board. Then fill out WA State teacher certification application and provide necessary documents.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 18 years or older

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 2 years Klallam Language (high school certificate or equivalent experience)

  • 2 years teaching experience

  • First Aid and Infant Child CPR Card

  • Valid Food Handler's Permit

  • Valid WA State driver's license and clean driving record in order to be insurable

  • Pass Criminal History Background check (no felonies, or child related offenses)

  • A physical exam with results in letter format that states applicant is free of communicable diseases, including results of a negative TB, test prior to employment.

  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free Workplace policies.

  • Must sign confidentiality statement and maintain strict confidentiality.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Ability to re-arrange schedule to be available for evening and weekend activities

  • Extensive knowledge of the Klallam Language, culture and traditions

  • Ability to document and organize work time, participant attendance, drum group & class finances, etc.

  • Ability to create and implement Klallam language and cultural curriculum

  • Knowledge of proper cultural protocol pertaining to hosting and participating in cultural events.

  • Ability to supervise children and/or adults of all ages while ensuring a safe environment by being able to monitor and respond to events going on at all times during classes and events.

  • Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with Tribal youth, adults, elders, tribal and local officials, as well as other agency staff (school district staff, other tribe's staff, etc).

  • Ability to use basic Microsoft programs (word, publisher, excel).

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and maintain program wide goals & priorities.

  • Ability to work within the budget provided by supervisor

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing, reading & writing.

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.

    As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring, in Accordance with P.L. 93-638.
