Job Description

JOB TITLE: Title VI Elder Nutrition Program Assistant Cook

Overview: This position is responsible for assisting the head cook in the preparation and serving of food that meets the nutritional standards of USDA guidelines. The assistant cook will follow established sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards and will coordinated with the Head Cook to serve the congregate meal and delivery of meals for homebound elders. The assistant cook will work with the Head Cook to ensure that all supplies and the kitchen facility are cleaned on a daily basis.

SENIOR MEAL PROGRAM COOK: Part-time, 25 hours per week

SALARY LEVEL: Level $11.00/hour

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Title VI Elder Nutrition Program Head Cook

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Helps to prepare nutritional meals using recipes appropriate for seniors on-site and for delivery, including USDA recommended daily requirements and those for special diets as needed or requested, with portions meeting Older Americans’ Act regulations.

2. Assist with the preparation and serving of congregate and home-delivery meals at the scheduled times.

3. Along with the Head Cook, responsible for kitchen maintenance, including washing all supplies used in the preparation and serving of the meal and cleaning the kitchen and dining area at the end of the day (including wiping down counters and sweeping and moping the floor) to ensure that the facility meets the standards established by the Public Health Department

4. Must maintain skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate the equipment and machines used in the performance of this job: oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer, and chef’s knives, etc.

5. Comply with personal hygiene standards

6. Maintain a current food handler’s card

7. Observe proper food preparation and handling techniques.

8. Set tables and serving area for meals

9. Ensure the meal counts are kept through the participant sign-in sheets

10. Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Washington State Food Handler’s Card

  • Valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance

  • Considerable knowledge of group meal preparation and nutrition requirements for elders

  • One year experience preparing meals for 30+ people in a professional setting is preferred

  • One year experience working in a Native American community is preferred

  • Ability to follow policies and procedures, follow instructions and adhere to prescribed routines and practices

  • Ability to effectively meet and communicate with elders of the community

  • Able to read and follow recipes, make arithmetic calculations accurately, prioritize concurrent demands and work in both a team environment and independently

  • Ability to maintain a courteous, helpful manner

  • Ability to understand and explain and enforce the rules and regulations of the Title VI Elder’s Nutrition Program

  • Must pass a criminal background check and must be able to comply with the Lower Ewha Klallam Tribe’s Drug Free Workplace polices

  • Program-related education and training may be required and may be paid by the program

    1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, see, hear, walk, handle objects and tools, and reach with arms and hands.

    2. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift or move objects up to 40 pounds, and is regularly required to sweep and mop floors and clean tables.

  • As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring, in Accordance with P.L. 93-638.
