Description

CLASS SUMMARY:

Provides intake medical evaluations within 24 hours of admission, responds by phone 24/7 to urgent medical issues.

DISTINGUISHING ELEMENTS OF THE CLASS:

I. IMPACT: Work of this class has immediate effect on admissions to residential crisis stabilization program. The incumbent has the responsibility for assuring that individuals are medically cleared for residential treatment. The Nurse Practitioner, when covering in the absence of the Physician, has direct responsibility for the medical care and well-being of assigned patients.

II. LATITUDE: Medical screenings are generally performed with a nursing assistant. Other duties are performed independently. The assigned Physician and the Medical Director of Crisis Stabilization Services provide consultation and supervision on an ongoing basis.

III. INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: Work involves regular contact with individuals with mentally illness as well as substance abusing individuals. This position has ongoing interaction with multidisciplinary staff members.

V. DIFFICULTY: Work involves the frequent provision of general medical assessment and treatment. Knowledge of withdrawal and overdose symptoms is needed.

VI. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment. Incumbent is frequently exposed to individuals who may be physically unhealthy and emotionally unstable.

VII. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

-Ability to provide comprehensive medical examinations.

-Ability to establish and maintain rapport with individuals having Mental Health and Substance Abuse disorders.

-Thorough knowledge of primary medical care.

-Ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of professionals.

VIII. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Provide physical examinations as required by federal and state standards and program guidelines.

-Maintains up-to-date well documented medical records which comply with federal and state standards.

-Reviews all laboratory results and makes appropriate recommendations.

-Assumes on call responsibilities for admission dosages or other program concerns of a medical nature.

-Participates in case staffings as a member of a multidisciplinary team as needed.

-Counsels individuals and staff on medical issues.

-Other duties as necessary.

IX. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some walking, moving, carrying, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.
