Summary of Responsibilities:

General Laborers perform tasks involving heavy physical labor at highway, civil construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolition sites using a variety of hand and power tools of all types.

Expectations and Essential Functions:

Ensures quality at a productive rate on assigned projects

  • Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor on job site
  • Shows up to work on time every day and be proactively engaged in assigned work
  • Digs ditches and trenches
  • Lifts and carries objects and materials
  • Assists other craft workers
  • Loads and unloads trucks
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Maintains equipment and tools to ensure long lasting use

  • Maintains clean tools and equipment, removing trash, debris, and other material from in and around work areas and jobsites on a daily basis
  • Performs other jobsite cleanup duties as assigned by supervisor, specifically cleanup and organization that is required to be completed in immediate work vicinity and maintain a secure and safe jobsite

Adheres to all safety regulations and reports any violations to field supervision immediately

  • Follows proper protocols and instructions to ensure the safe operation of tools and equipment
  • Always wears appropriate safety equipment (PPPE) including, hardhat, approved work boots and safety glasses
  • Observes and examines colored flags and ground markings indicating the location of underground utilities and structures, identifies potential hazards and ensures that they are properly marked and secured.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule
  • Able to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions
  • Knowledge of the proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in construction work
  • Knowledge of safety precautions
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
  • Able to work in a team environment and communicate effectively

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work is acceptable. Must be able to pass a drug test and applicable pre-employment screenings.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
