Minimum Qualifications:

Possess a Bachelor’s Degree and be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited law school. Must also possess a personal laptop computer to be used for the duration of the internship.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Growth and Learning Opportunity for Law Students (Unpaid Internship)

Summer Internship beginning June 1, 2018 through July 27, 2018

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to expose law students to a career working in the Municipal Court, as judges, solicitors and public defenders, and to provide the Municipal Court with legal research and writing assistance.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Confers with supervisor/ internship mentor to obtain direction regarding assignments and priorities; organizes tasks to complete assigned work; confers with court employees and assists with complex/problem situations.

Performs legal research on behalf of the Chief Judge, City Solicitor and/or City Public Defender as assigned; assists Chief Judge with drafting of Court Orders and other documents; assists City Solicitor or Public Defender with drafting of Motions, Briefs and other documents.

Attends Court sessions, including First Appearance hearings, Plea & Arraignments, Motions calendars, Environmental Court, Bench Trials and Failure To Appear calendars, as assigned.

Review the administration of the Municipal Court’s Pretrial Diversion Program with the Solicitor; appears for and assists with intake interviews of program candidates, communicates with Program providers on behalf of City Solicitor, communicates with Program participants on behalf of City Solicitor.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e- mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Communicates with City officials, supervisor, other employees, clients, third party service contractors, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.
