Description

Vytran, a division of Thorlabs seeks a senior-level optical/laser engineer to join our Research & Development team. The candidate will be responsible for running their own research projects aimed at developing advanced optical fiber processing equipment for a new generation of glass processing equipment.

The position is based in Morganville, NJ. Domestic and international travel will be less than 10%.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Work independently and collaboratively on research projects.
  • Work with CO2 laser, CW and pulsed, on optical fiber processing
  • Design experiments and qualification/test plans for the system and the processes.
  • Optical system design in Zemax, prototyping, and system troubleshooting
  • Detailed documentation on design, experiment, prototyping, testing, and etc…
  • Participate in engineering and general design reviews as required.
  • Perform optical expertise function for engineering team and all manufacturing operations for any related issues, problems, or improvements.
  • Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing/design issues and implement cost reduction ideas with regard to company products.
  • Interact with vendors and purchasers concerning supplied and proposed components.
  • Keep current with newest applications, products, and manufacturing techniques within the industry. Share, discuss, and collaborate while looking for opportunities to implement.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5+ years' experience designing optical systems with hands on experience working in the lab environment.
  • Experience with CAD, prefer Inventor, SolidWorks.
  • Demonstrated technical background and hands on experience in such fields as optics, opto-mechanical design, laser optics, polarization, microscopy, and telecommunications. Hands on experience with optics including alignment, measurement, and testing

Education:

  • M.S. in Optical Engineering or Physics

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • In depth knowledge of CO2 laser systems and material processing with laser systems
  • Able to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Proficient on optical system design and troubleshooting with Zemax
  • Knowledge of optical-mechanical and electrical components in the system
  • Team oriented. Proven teamwork skills in a cross-functional engineering environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of current optical design, fabrication, assembly, and test techniques
  • Project Management skills a plus
  • Strong ability to take initiative with a deep sense of ownership
  • History of demonstrated innovation
  • Flexibility/adaptability in a fast-paced & dynamic environment
