Description

PURPOSE:
Provide assistance to Nurses in caring for the clients of Kitsap Mental Health Services 24- Hour Services. To give quality care to the clients as well as participate as a member of the therapeutic treatment team.

RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:

  • Observe clients and report any changes on the client’s condition.
  • Clearly understand the legal and ethical limits of the position.
  • Clear and accurate understanding of medical and pharmacologic terminology, manage medications for clients without making dosage errors.
  • Medication aide's role is providing routine daily medications, either prescription or non-prescription, to patients whose condition and drug regimen are stable.
  • Medication aide observes a change in the patient's vital signs or behavior, or any other indication of adverse effects from a medication, it must be reported to the charge nurse.
  • Perform basic duties through hands-on care to the clients to include but not limited to: monitor vital signs, reporting any irregularities to the charge nurse, assisting clients in obtaining hygiene items, or other needs the client may have.
  • Documentation of medication given.
  • Reporting to the Licensed nurse any adverse effects or additional needs the client may have.
  • Assist in the collaboration with the team to develop and implement a plan of care for the clients.
  • Ensure provision for or access by referral to healthcare for clients to include :
    • Assisting the clients in following all prescribed treatments, modified diets, activities or activity limitation.
    • Assisting clients in keeping healthcare appointments.
    • Assist in obtaining emergency health care, when needed. Initiate emergency procedures using technical skills and professional judgment and perform appropriate nursing/medical intervention(s).
    • Documentation of the residents taking medications and any observed responses.
    • Monitor self-medication administration.
    • Scheduling of medical appointments, if needed.
  • Dispose of medications according to the pharmaceutical guidelines and KMHS policy.
  • Complete nursing notes and other documentation necessary for quality care in an accurate, timely manner. To ensure meeting agency, statutory, regulatory, statistical and funding requirements.
  • Respond to current fire drill/evacuation plan with awareness of duties and procedure.
  • Adhere to unit operating and nursing policies and procedures.
  • Provide flexible coverage as scheduled, on-call, or per requested.
  • In addition to the above, any other responsibilities appropriate to the position and not specifically listed in the job description.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Nursing Assistant with Medication Assistant Endorsement in Washington State. Two year CNA experience preferred. Two years experience in mental health preferred and/ or long-term care.

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATION: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, talk or listen and lift up to 50 pounds. Peripheral vision is also required for this position. A fair degree of flexibility and strength is required in this position due to the infrequent, yet essential, use of one’s body in the temporary physical restraint of some clients.
