The Accountant is responsible for all areas relating to professional accounting and financial reporting. Develops and maintains accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. Addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, payroll, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the Foundation’s financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensures an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close.
  • Ensures the timely reporting of all Foundation monthly financial information.
  • Ensures the accurate and timely processing of Foundation payroll, 401(k), and required regulatory reporting.
  • Assists with the accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
  • Performs general ledger and bank account reconciliations.
  • Supports budget and forecasting activities.
  • Monitors and analyzes department work and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Responds to inquiries from the Director of Finance, VP of Finance and Administration and Foundation-wide managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests, and the like.
  • Coordinates department efforts for the preparation of the annual financial report and associated audit and tax returns.
  • Works with the Director of Finance to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
  • Assists in development and implementation of accounting and auditing procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Provides training to new and existing staff as needed.
  • Supports Director of Finance with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • Conducts research as necessary to provide requested information to co-workers, staff, students, or representatives of government or accreditation agencies.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Accounting and a minimum of two years progressively responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit setting.
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office products including: Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience in the processing of payroll and a working knowledge of relevant acts, regulations, policies, and agreements relating to payroll administration, i.e., compliance issues, segregation of duties, current trends and developments in payroll, etc.
  • Experience working with a computerized financial system.
  • Must be PC proficient and have experience using a variety of standard office machines and software, i.e., photocopy machines, scanners, postage machines, phones, and related equipment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Sage MAS90 financial software, including Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, Accounts Payable and Fixed Assets modules.
  • Experience in processing payroll using a payroll service, Paychex experience is a plus.
