Description

The position effectively assures vendor & manufacturing compliance to Thorlabs ISO9001 quality standards protecting customers. The Quality Technician / Programmer uses automated test and measurement equipment for visual and dimensional inspection of precision parts and makes quick, accurate pass/fail decisions. The majority of this person's time should be spent programming and fixturing the inspection equipment for Thorlabs components coming off the CNC machines and manually equipment to guarantee the accuracy of the CNC machine set up and to ensure that the internal machine shop is producing quality components. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the development of proven CMM programs by using machine prints and CAD models
  • Create fixturing for holding the pieces being inspected
  • Provide support of programs
  • Responsible for assisting operators with drawing interpretation and proper fixturing/setup to ensure that reliable inspections are performed and accurate data is obtained.
  • Responsible for aiding machine operators on interpretation of CMM reports to drive proper machine adjustments and minimize scrap.
  • Provides CMM training to CMM and other machine operators in report analysis and CMM use/programming.
  • Read blueprints, data, manuals, or other materials to determine specifications, inspection and testing procedures, adjustment methods, certification processes, formulas, or measuring instruments required.
  • Document control of processes that have been validated.
  • Assist with product flow through the department.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience programing in PC-DMIS
  • Strong GD&T
  • Mechanical manufacturing inspection experience preferred.
  • Experience with optical measurement systems is a plus

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to learn, understand, and effectively apply sampling plans.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to operate in both individual and team environments.
  • Capable of reading mechanical drawings and interpret dimensional tolerances. Knowledge of mechanical measurement and machining as well as an understanding of ISO9001 as it applies to inspection and non-conformance.
  • Must understand, use and be able to explain sample plans (AQL…)
  • Adaptable to process and procedure changes.
  • Capacity to convert from imperial to metric measurements.
  • Ability to meet department standards for productivity and quality.
  • Computer literacy using MS Office, Outlook and ERP software is mandatory.
  • Must know how to use common mechanical test equipment including calipers, micrometers, gauges, pins and vision systems for mechanical measurement.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Keep abreast of topics in their field as well as be excited about continual training and growth in their area
