Associate Veterinarian

This is your opportunity to join the dynamic Zoo Operations team at Woodland Park Zoo. Applications are now being accepted for a third veterinarian (full-time, 40 hours/week) to join our two veterinarians currently practicing in our Animal Health department. This opportunity will remain posted until filled.

The Associate Veterinarian works in a team environment to provide preventative and routine veterinary care, including multimodal treatments and surgery, to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the Zoo animal residents. Collaborates on and supports research and conservation program activities of the Zoo.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with animal care staff and veterinary team to implement a preventive medicine program that includes quarantine, routine exams, disease monitoring, parasite control, vaccinations, tuberculin testing, dental prophylaxis, and periodic nutrition reviews.
  • Diagnose illness and injury in collection animals and provide appropriate treatment and therapies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and local veterinary and medical specialists on clinical cases as needed.
  • Participate in dialogue with area curators and supervisors about animal care and welfare, nutrition, breeding, husbandry, and housing.
  • Perform gross necropsies and collect samples for histopathology, prepare necropsy reports and analyze findings, formulate recommendations for preventive measures.
  • Prepare and maintain required records, ensuring accuracy and professionalism.
  • Support AZA conservation programs and other research efforts by collecting samples and by gathering and submitting data as appropriate.
  • May conduct or participate in research projects into the husbandry, breeding, welfare, behavior, or conservation of both captive and wild populations of animals.
  • Participate in maintaining standards and regulations of AZA, AAZV, USDA, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies and associations as they apply to zoological institutions and veterinary programs/facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to animal care, transport, treatment, and the handling of controlled substances.
  • Participate in AAZV and other professional organizations and forums; remain current on CEU requirements.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for publication or delivery at both professional and public forums.
  • Teach and mentor visiting veterinary students, technicians, and interns, as needed.
  • Interact with Zoo guests, members, donors, the media, and internal and external clients; considerable interpersonal skills and focus on the guest experience are required.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no specific supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Knowledge of a wide range of veterinary medicine and the ability to perform diagnosis, treatment, nutrition analysis, and surgical procedures for the care of exotic animal species.
  • Ability to analyze unknown problems and conditions related to the care and treatment of exotic and non-exotic animals; and determine the best course of treatment.
  • Proven ability to research and develop innovative approaches for animal health and nutrition issues.
  • Advanced management, technical or scientific skill related to the care of exotic animals, experience and leadership in AZA and/or AAZV conservation and science programs.
  • Must demonstrate initiative, imagination and creativity related to animal care and wildlife conservation.
  • Working knowledge of AAZV and AZA policies and procedures is preferred.
  • Bird and reptile experience preferred.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • DVM or VMD or equivalent from an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Three years minimum of exotic animal medicine experience is required, preferably in a zoological facility.
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Washington within 3-months of hire date.
  • Obtain DEA license to use Class 2 narcotics.
  • USDA category II accreditation to certify health for interstate and international transport of animals.
  • Must obtain a valid State of Washington driver’s license.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Preference will be given to candidates that are ACZM Board Certified or Board Eligible.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • USDA Accreditation License
  • Controlled Substances Licenses
  • State of Washington Veterinary License
  • TB Test annually
  • Membership in the AZA and AAZV at a professional level
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License required

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and in depth experience with ZIMS is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Considerable physical exertion, such as extensive walking, bending, stooping and regular climbing of ladders
  • Lifting of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time
  • Ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances
  • Ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Due to the nature of responsibilities for this position, weekend, evening, and holiday work is expected.
