Lead Biologist

Redhorse Corporation is hiring a Lead Biologist Lead who will work on-site at the customer’s facility at Fort Irwin, CA to perform services in support of natural resource management and in compliance with the Sikes Act, Endangered Species Act (ESA); other applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and related DoD and U.S. Army Directives (including Army Regulation 200-1, “Environmental Protection and Enhancement”). Primary duties will focus on leading the natural resources team, acting as senior scientist/project manager, and collaborating with staff biologists and technicians on fieldwork, research, report writing and QA/QC review. The Lead Biologist will communicate directly with the client, manage work assignments with team members, and provide technical oversight and mentorship.

The natural resource management services shall include, but are not limited to, support and implementation of the installation’s Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP); monitoring of threatened and endangered species and other species of concern (e.g. Desert tortoise, Mojave fringe-toed lizard, burrowing owl, Lane Mountain milkvetch, and desert cymopterus); monitoring of natural springs and seeps; maintaining weather stations/ compiling climate data; responding to wildlife calls; conducting pre-construction surveys to determine the presence or absence of wildlife and vegetation; and conducting environmental outreach briefings and events concerning Mojave Desert ecology and/or military requirements related to environmental laws.

Position Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master of Science (MS) in a biological science field preferred and 8+ years of relevant experience, however, will consider a
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in biology, botany, ecology or other biological science undergraduate degree and 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Must have work history leading and conducting biological fieldwork and natural resources management.
  • Must have experience managing teams and working directly with the client.
  • Upon hiring the applicant must be able to pass a federal background check required prior to gaining access to unclassified government computer workstations.
  • Applicant must provide examples of written biological reports.

Candidates for this position must be able to work in changing physical conditions:

  • in extreme climatic conditions and rapidly changing temperatures;
  • must be able to walk over long distances and across of variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces;
  • must be able to climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl;
  • must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs across a distance of as much as 30 yards;
  • must be able to work with minimal supervision;
  • must have experience managing teams and working directly with clients
  • strong leadership, communication and project management skills
  • ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • well-developed verbal and technical report writing skills
  • must possess or be able to obtain a standard California Driver's License; the candidate may be required to operate a government-owned motor vehicle safely
  • must be able to use GPS technology, read maps, and be skilled in North American compliance Archaeological techniques and practices.
  • must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation
