GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To provide oversight of the financial operations and assets of Wider Church Ministries (WCM) and Local Church Ministries (LCM). In addition, work closely with the Assistant Controller providing support as needed for the Office of the General Minister and President (OGMP) and Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM). Oversight includes financial policy development and implementation as well as directing the activities of the financial operations function including cash flow, budget development and reporting, and internal and external financial reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the CFO, and the Executive Ministers of WCM and LCM in financial decision-making by analyzing historical financial data; identifying trends; providing forecasts; developing, guiding and training staff in budget preparation processes; preparing and interpreting budgets, and compiling financial reports for the United Church of Christ Board (UCCB), WCM, LCM and Common Global Ministries Board (CGMB) of Directors, staff and other organizations.

  • Responsible for the financial reporting of WCM's and LCM's investments, custody and accountability of their funds and other assets, staffing support of the UCCB Investment and Finance committees as requested by the CFO or Board Chair, and such liaison tasks in the business affairs of the corporations as assigned.

  • Monitor compliance of WCM and LCM staff to policies, procedures and internal controls, identify areas needing remedial action and implement changes in consultation with the CFO, appropriate Executive Minister and auditors.

  • Meet regularly with the WCM and LCM Executive Ministers on financial matters directly related to Wider Church Ministries and Local Church Ministries.

  • Be an active member of the Financial Services team of the United Church of Christ Board; representing WCM and LCM interests in that process.

  • Collaborate with the Treasurer of the Division of Overseas Ministries (DOM), Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the development of common budgets and chart of accounts for the CGMB and in the presentation and interpretation of financial reports.

  • Direct, oversee and assess activities of WCM and LCM finances performing certain accounting functions in support of endowments, programs and other related funds and investments through the use of accounting, sales and fulfillment, and investment software and systems. Keep abreast of technological changes and keep staff up-to-date on uses of software.

  • Assist in overseeing the properties of WCM, manage, maintain and evaluate their utility as well as acquisition and disposal in conjunction with the Investment and Endowment Committee; maintain adequate insurance on all WCM properties.

  • Monitor relations with estates, both those in place and in process; ensure that use of legacies is properly recorded in accordance with donor wishes; establish new funds when warranted and provide reports to the UCCB and other organizations.

  • Provide all audit-related documents for WCM, LCM, and Combined Financial Statements including but not limited to the preparation of support schedules and footnotes; provide staff support to the Audit Committee.

  • Represent WCM as a Trustee for the American College Endowment Fund. Serve as the Treasurer for UCAN Inc.

  • Meet with missionaries to process the newly-appointed and to facilitate home assignments and end-of-service/retirement transitions; monitor missionary correspondence relating to financial, health and personal concerns.

  • Review and initial all account analysis and reconciliations completed by the WCM and LCM Ministry Specialists.

  • Attend the General Synod of the United Church of Christ as requested.

  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer and/or Executive Minister of WCM or LCM.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration is required; preference will be given to candidates with an MBA or CPA credentials, and experience in church or not-for-profit financial management. Relevant financial management experience with in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, and extensive knowledge and experience with financial computer applications and systems.

  • Experience in preparation, evaluation and interpretation of budgets, financial statements and reports; ability to recommend and implement sound fiscal policies and procedures; experience in dealing with foreign exchange rates and tax structures.

  • Demonstrated communication, managerial, supervisory and interpersonal skills- ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with staff, missionaries, directors and partners.

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the Church, with a knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about the history and polity of the United Church of Christ and of the history, purpose and programs of WCM, LCM and CGMB.

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as an understanding of mission.

  • Some travel within the U.S. is required while overseas travel may be necessary periodically.
