Description

The Spiral Garden is an integrated art/garden/play program for children and youth with physical disabilities and developmental delays.

Participants will interact and play through music, visual art, movement, drama, gardening and other arts activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall care and maintenance of the garden
  • Demonstrated ability to share knowledge and gardening tasks with program participants
  • Demonstrated ability to enable creativity of others
  • To work with children with disabilities using gardening centred activities
  • To contribute to planning meetings and daily staff meetings during program
  • To assist the safe participation of children and youth in program
  • To supervise lunch/break times of participants
  • To collaborate with program staff, volunteers and families
  • To work as a team member with Artistic Coordinator, Artists, volunteers and care staff, in order to ensure programming goals are met, including participation in group activities
  • To produce a written version of the story created in collaboration with participants and arts staff at program's end
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • BFA or college diploma/certificate in horticulture, outdoor education or equivalent
  • Preferred education & experience in gardening techniques and training/skills related to children and youth with developmental and acquired disabilities
  • Minimum of one-year experience in the practice of gardening; 1:1 and group facilitation
  • CPR HS (Heart Saver) OR ability to obtain prior to first day of employment
  • Demonstrated expertise in planning, implementation and evaluation of garden activities
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage full participation in activity area
  • Must be flexible, have the ability to assess the needs of individuals and quickly respond to those needs
  • Talent/skills in other areas such as music, art an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with staff/clients/families
  • Sound judgment and ability to work independently at times
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to efficiently manage working hours
  • Excellent communication skills
