Description

The successful candidate will be required to work during the period of June 4, 2018 to August 31, 2018.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and set up outdoor program area/site including building outdoor structures/furniture (eg. Benches, shelves, support structures)
  • Mentor and supervise a large group of program volunteers, assigning duties, daily supervision and regular evaluation.
  • Direct volunteers to support the needs of the program participants, artistic staff and care team staff.
  • Monitor the safety and practical aspects of the day to day operation of the Spiral Garden site including assistance with large scale garden projects (eg. digging compost piles, building compost bins, material moving, etc)
  • Greet parents, children and any visitors as they check in at the beginning and at the end of the day and direct them appropriately, as needed.
  • Working with the Care Team Coordinator, be aware of and address the needs of the participants
  • Participate in daily staff meetings communicating any site and/or volunteer issues to the larger team.
  • Together with the Care Team Coordinator, create and supervise daily lunch schedule for children and staff
  • Work effectively in a team environment to provide a safe, stimulating experience for all participants, volunteers and staff members.
  • Will be required to work long days (up to 42.5 hrs per week) including early morning arrival

Qualifications

  • Outdoor and Adventure Education Diploma or Degree or equivalent
  • Experience working with volunteers, providing direction, support and evaluation
  • Knowledge of and experience working with children and youth with diverse needs.
  • Building/Carpentry skills
  • WHIMIS and/or Health and Safety Certification
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification or equivalent
  • Sensitivity to the needs of program participants and their families.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of day to day duties while providing supervision and trouble-shooting support as required.
  • Ability to think quickly, anticipate concerns and problem solve effectively.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a larger team.
  • Adaptability, flexibility and ability to multi task.
