Description

Clinical Care Assistants are unregulated care providers who work under the direct/indirect supervision of the inpatient nursing unit team leader/delegate or Community Therapeutic Recreation and Life skills Program clinicians. At Holland Bloorview Clinical Care Assistants are Bachelor of Science Nursing Students who have completed a minimum of one year (accelerated program) or two years of a 4 year program. Clinical Care Assistants work with clients who have a low complexity of care needs, high predictability of their condition, low technical requirements and low level and range of potential outcomes. The Regulated Health Professions Act and College of Nurses of Ontario direct the type of care they can provide based on the level of supervision.

The successful candidates will be required to work on the inpatient units, respite camp and community therapeutic recreation and life skills groups. Although the work is seasonal for summer programming, clinical care assistants can continue to be scheduled to work (if they have availability) throughout the school year both on the inpatient units and with outpatient therapeutic recreation and life skills groups (when required).

This Position will support both programs outlined below

Inpatient Care and Respite Camp Description:

Overnight respite camp is offered throughout July and August every summer. Clients are admitted to an inpatient unit (a small “respite” unit is created within the existing inpatient units). Respite camp provides clients and families with one week of camp experience, supported by clinical care assistants and therapeutic recreation staff under the supervision of registered practical nurses. The camp is focused on a therapeutic recreational experience while providing the nursing and medical support that the child requires for their activities of daily living. Throughout the week, clients will participate in a number of activities including swimming, arts and crafts, gym sports and time in the playroom.

Community Therapeutic Recreation, Life skills Development & Transitions Program Description:

Under the umbrella of participation and inclusion, therapeutic recreation and life skills are designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person's level of functioning. Our goals are to increase independence and life activities, promote health and wellness and reduce barriers to participation.

Programs offered throughout the year include a variety of recreation and life skills programs that are structured to support clients and families during important transition points, therapeutic recreation and life skills services are guided by developmental milestones, promoting life skills so that clients learn to function optimally within their home and community environments. Experience-based life skills activities teach skills using discussion, role playing, problem-solving, peer teaching and experiential learning techniques. Acquired skills are practiced in a simulated and/or real environment where calculated risk is encouraged. For the months of July and August we offer these services in the format of individual/multi-week day programs as well as residential overnight programs.
