The objective of this internship is to carry out the buffer characterization for microbial growth.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conducting research in a bench-based setting
  • Designing the study by determining the potential for each buffer to support or not support microbial growth will determine whether a filter requires to be subjected to post use filter integrity testing
  • Performing bioburden testing
  • Recording data and maintaining a lab notebook
  • Presenting a technical presentation summarizing the results and authoring the study report

What are the objectives/goals of the position?

Two studies:

{C}· Resin (Protein A) Lifecycle extension study.

This will potentially allow FMC to make significant cost savings by extending the number of cycles a Protein A may be used from current 87 to 200 cycles, therefore extending the lifetime use of the resin. This will also significantly aid in our drive to achieve a $100/g target and supports the 2018 site waste improvement initiative.

{C}· Buffer characterization for microbial growth

By determining the potential for each buffer to support or not support microbial growth will determine whether a filter requires to be subjected to post use filter integrity testing e.g. for filters subjected to buffers which are bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal, the filters would not be required to be subjected to filter integrity testing. This would allow for significant waste savings related to environmental (reduced WFI usage) and reduced labor associated with filter integrity testing) in support of both the site’s waste and green savings initiatives.

What are the primary duties of this position?

To assist in the completion of the above-mentioned studies. Including: column running, buffer preparation, preforming analytical assays such as A280, and analyzing results.
