Description

This is a great opportunity to join the rapidly growing Fiber Optics Business Unit of Thorlabs, a leading company in the exciting Photonics industry. We oversee the development of all fiber optics related products, including the manufacturing of optical glass, optical fiber, cables, and devices for applications ranging from research laboratories to medical and industrial applications. The ideal candidate for this position is a self-motivated leader with an entrepreneurial spirit who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment. You will lead a team focused on meeting customer's needs and expectations through product design and development. You must have experience with product and process design, project management and managing technical people.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Leads a team of engineers and technical resources responsible for identifying new product and product line ideas
  • Responsible for improving existing products and driving them to market
  • Identifies opportunities for the development of new products through data and market analysis as well as a variety of other sources
  • Ensures that the proper scope and specifications are established and maintained throughout the product development cycle
  • Develops sales forecasts and cost projections for new products
  • Ensures that new products are designed for manufacturability and thoroughly tested.
  • Ensures that presentations of new products released to the website are accurate and highly visible to customers
  • Identifies and implements opportunities to improve speed to market
  • Moderates a forum for new product ideas and product tracking ensuring that all fiber optic topics are updated
  • Provides technical support to other business units for fiber optics product lines.
  • Works with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing and Planning departments throughout business units in all entities
  • Selects, develops, trains and supervises staff
  • Provides development opportunities for all direct reports
  • Develops and implements methods and procedures aimed at monitoring projects and key process criteria
  • Prepares and delivers presentations to executive management
  • Supports tradeshows and exhibitions of fiber optics product lines
  • Directs activities associated with the creation, implementation and maintenance of all SOP's
  • Maintains drawings, documentation and information integrity in accordance to ISO and Thorlabs quality standards.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Engineering Manager/Product Design Manager or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Six Sigma Black Belt accreditation and/or Lean Sigma certification preferred
  • Must have previous management experience; directing and managing individuals with different technical backgrounds
  • Project management experience preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics or other related Engineering disciplines
  • Master's degree preferred

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Fiber Optics experience is required
  • Experience with use of SolidWorks 3D modeling or equivalent
  • General knowledge of CNC machining, fiber optics and optical design
  • Manufacturing and design experience with small, tightly toleranced components
  • Working knowledge of Value Stream Mapping and Lead Time Reduction
  • Thorough understanding of MRP, Bills of Materials and Route creation
