Postdoctoral fellow-TRAIL lab

Applications are invited for a temporary, full-time post-doctoral fellow (5 days per week to March 2019) with experience and interest in improving inclusion for young people with disabilities. This fellow will work with a Senior Scientist and multi-disciplinary research teams in the Bloorview Research Institute (fully affiliated with the University of Toronto), TRAIL lab and other partners and organizations.

This post-doctoral fellow will contribute to a research program focused on improving inclusion and employment for people with disabilities. This position requires someone with experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research and effective writing and knowledge translation skills. The candidate will be responsible for developing their own related research related to improving inclusion of young people with disabilities in the workforce, contributing to lab projects and mentoring other students within the lab.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to data collection (organize recruitment, conduct interviews, survey data) and analysis
  • Contribute to writing peer-reviewed publications and funding applications
  • Regularly report to principal and co-investigators and other team members
  • Write and submit research ethics applications, amendments and renewals as needed
  • Mentor undergraduate, graduate students and lab volunteers as needed
  • Prepare summaries and presentations for multiple audiences and other knowledge translation activities
  • Liaise with clinicians, families and other community partners
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Recent PhD in Sociology, Rehabilitation Science, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies, or related field (core competences expected with such a degree include: a solid understanding and experience with a variety of research methods and data analysis techniques, CORE and RCR ethics training, relevant social and/or health science theories / frameworks, effective writing and presentation skills, critical thinking, organizational skills)
  • Strong academic record and previous research experience preferred
  • Experience with interviewing and qualitative analysis (NVIVO), preferred
  • Experience with survey data analysis and SPSS, preferred
  • Advanced word processing skills (MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint, REFworks and Endnotes), and ability to learn new software as needed, is required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet multiple, competing deadlines (effective time management and organizational skills are essential)
  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders to develop relationships and achieve shared goals
  • Excellent organization and priority setting skills
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while taking responsibility for progress and also able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and consistently produce high quality work
  • Ability to write effectively for multiple audiences (academic, lay, policy decision-makers)
  • Creativity, diplomacy and tact, essential
  • Experience with knowledge mobilization, preferred
  • Experience or knowledge of disability disclosure, workplace accommodations, vocational rehabilitation, social inclusion and/or gender and work is considered an asset
  • Commitment to and support of the organizational mission and vision of the hospital and the TRAIL lab
