The Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital invites applications for a Scientist focused in clinical nursing science that pertains to children and youth with disabilities and their families. Through an integration of our unique strength-based rehabilitation nursing model, our nursing vision is to empower clients and families to advocate for themselves, enhance every aspect of a child's potential, and enable ourselves, our teams and our clients to achieve full impact through integrated best practices in research, clinical care, teaching and learning.

The candidate has a PhD in clinical nursing science or a related field and is registered as a nurse with a provincial regulatory body. They are an experienced paediatric health care professional with advanced preparation in research methods, analyses and scholarly output activities. They have an understanding of the unique experiences of children and youth with disabilities and their families; their complex care health needs and transitions; and family engagement to further knowledge, research activities and strengths-based care. The candidate must have at least 5 years of clinical experience as a practicing registered nurse or nurse practitioner. Post-doctoral training is preferred and a promising track record of early career funding, scholarly publication, and knowledge translation activities is required. Experience with transdisciplinary approaches (e.g. nursing, arts, social sciences, rehabilitation sciences, psychology, medicine, engineering, neuroscience, physiology, etc.) and the use of novel methodologies is highly desirable. Candidates should be eligible for an academic cross-appointment with the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and in the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and lead a defined program of research that aligns with the clinical area of focus.

  • Address important research questions for families and caregivers of children and youth with disabilities, complex care health needs, and transitions.

  • Conduct innovative and transdisciplinary research that incorporates strengths-based approaches towards a better understanding of family and caregiver needs.

  • Develop new knowledge that contributes to positive health outcomes for children and families with diverse dis/abilities.

  • Demonstrate an open and flexible approach to establishing and advancing collaborative relationships with members of clinical teams, research teams, and external stakeholders, to move forward the research agenda at Holland Bloorview.

  • Secure competitive research funding, attract and develop research trainees, authentically engage families, publish in high impact journals, and lead knowledge translation activities.

Competencies required include: expertise in qualitative or quantitative or mixed method research; ability to formulate and lead an innovative, nationally-leading scientific program of inquiry that grows to an international scope; incorporates the client and family perspective in the design and implementation of research; superb scientific writing abilities and proficiency with writing journal articles; ability to work collaboratively with external stakeholders; ability to work with clinical teams and the Centres for Leadership at Holland Bloorview, where strengths-based care constitute an identified strategic priority; ability to effectively communicate with clinicians and faculty of different backgrounds; versatility with emerging knowledge translation practices; compelling potential to contribute to evidence-based practice and best-practice guidelines; exemplary mentorship skills with potential to train the next generation of nursing scientists; excellent teaching and presentation skills; proven analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills; and effective change leadership, project management, and judgment skills.

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement outlining current and future research interests, 3 representative publications and names of 3 references.
