Intern: MedImmune Translational Medicine

Bioinformatics Scientist Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca, a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule and biologic prescription medicines. MedImmune is pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas, including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; oncology; neuroscience; and infection and vaccines.

We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related major for an internship during the summer of 2018. This internship opportunity is with the Translational Medicine department.

The primary objective of this internship is to complete an analysis of Single Cell Sequencing (SCS) data related to NASH (Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis). Secondarily, the intern will develop a basic framework for analyzing similar experiments in the future. The analysis platform includes the R programming language, R Studio, and the Cell Ranger R kit for SCS.

Core Responsibilities:

This analysis will utilize SCS data sets associated with NASH. The intern will perform the following analysis:

  1. Using the Cell Ranger R kit, identify clusters of cells by querying known cell-specific markers that are relevant to the liver.
  2. Investigate the presence of sub-populations within clusters based on unique patterns of gene expression.
  3. Investigate changes in sub-population gene expression between a healthy and NASH liver.

 
Position Requirements

Position Requirements:

  • R programming experience required
  • Experience with R Studio is desirable
  • Background in biology is a plus
  • Undergraduate Junior, Seniors
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0+
