WORK OBJECTIVE
Responsible for inspecting construction work to verify that the work is following the Florida Building Codes which regulate building construction and related activities. Inspection duties are performed in the categories of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical and gas for which the inspector is qualified and licensed. Building Inspector levels (I-IV) will be determined at the time of hire based on the provisional and/or standard certifications held by the applicant (electrical, building, mechanical, plumbing, and 1 & 2 family dwelling inspectors).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Inspects buildings, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, gas and mechanical installations in the process of construction, expansion, alteration or removal and assures that such work is done in conformance with applicable codes, approved plans and permits. Identifies violations and enforces correction of code violations. Maintains records and makes reports. Upon completion of construction, makes final inspection to verify full compliance with codes, approved plans and ordinances.
- Advises and confers with building contractors, engineers, architects and others regarding building construction and applicable codes.
- Assists the Building Official and other Inspectors in the enforcement of all applicable building codes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- State of Florida Certified Inspector.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Valid Florida Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
- Must possess the State of Florida, Department of Business and Professional Regulations, 1 & 2 Family Building Inspector license PLUS THREE (3) of the following: Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector or Commercial Electrical Inspector license or ;
- ALL FIVE (5) of the following: Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Residential Electrical Inspector, and Commercial Electrical Inspector.
- Additional certification(s) from the State of Florida as a Plans Examiner is preferred.
Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Assistant City Manager - Administrative Services and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of structural, electrical, plumbing, gas, and mechanical construction methods, procedures and materials.
- Knowledge of the building codes and ordinances relating to construction and inspections utilized in Winter Garden.
- Ability to be firm in requiring remedy of building code violations.
- Ability to read construction codes, plans and specifications.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and to make necessary reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, contractors and others in the construction trade.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Moderate lifting and carrying (15 to 45 pounds)
- Crawling, kneeling, bending, balancing, stooping, and climbing
- Operation of a motor vehicle
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Works inside and outside in varying weather conditions with noise, slippery surfaces, and on uneven surfaces.
- Heights {up to 50 feet)
