Engineering Internship 



Performs sub-professional engineering work at an intern level in construction inspection as a team member of the Engineering department. Reviews specific planning, building, and engineering permits; assists applicants and the public as required; administers reviews for access, earthmoving and floodplain permits, landscaping, outdoor structural walls, lighting, construction management plans and drainage and erosion control plans; performs general plan reading and relays information from the plans to the contractor; additionally reports to the project engineer any issues or nonconformance to the plans.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in the bid process, including drafting bid and request for proposal (RFP) documents, and assembling contracts.
  • Assist in design engineering and inspection/construction engineering of various capital and maintenance improvement projects including tasks such as assembling contract quantities, taking measurements and reviewing/verifying payment requests and compiling questions on plans and specifications.
  • Attendance at operations and engineering staff meetings.
  • Assist in communication with contractors, consultants, and residents including drafting written correspondence.
  • GIS and/other technical work including basic drafting, scanning, and geo-referencing as built plans as well as field data collection.
  • Database data entry.
  • Assisting in traffic and engineering studies and data gathering.
  • Assists in the management of engineering related contracts.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED and must be pursuing a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field and have completed at least one academic year of college coursework.
  • Two years University experience preferred.
  • Must be able to receive credits for this internship from college program.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.


Knowledge of:

  • Professional principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • General office procedures, policies and practices, as well as basic knowledge of computer and other general office equipment.
  • Computer applications related to the work.

Skill in:

  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with minimum direction.
  • Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret and communicate complicated policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Using mathematics.
  • Driving safely over rough, narrow and winding terrain.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Using personal computers with intermediate level proficiency in document/file management, word-processing, database management, email usage and Internet browsers.
  • Accessing property data via the Internet.


  • Work is generally confined to a standard office environment. Occasional work is performed outside with exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Occasional travel required.


$15.00 per hour.
