Compliance Archaeologist

Redhorse Corporation has an immediate need for a Compliance Archaeologist to support our client at Ft. Irwin, CA. The Compliance Archaeologist will provide cultural resource management, compliance, and consultation services. The Compliance Archaeologist will augment existing customer capabilities, work in a team framework, and be an on-site specialist to facilitate the cultural resources program.

Duties and responsibilities for the Compliance Archaeologist include:

  • Conducting surveys prior to approval of dig permit requests to ensure protection of significant cultural or paleontological resources
  • Conducting background records searches, inventory and evaluation of cultural resources for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
  • Conducting archaeological site monitoring
  • Maintaining archaeological data across several databases
  • Authoring and reviewing a variety of survey and inventory reports and consultation packages to State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Native American tribes, to include the ability to make recommendations
  • Assisting with curation of archival materials in Fort Irwin’s Curation Facility
  • Ensuring that data collection and drafting of reports are conducted with the highest quality effort possible
  • Conducting or assisting with outreach briefings and events to promote cultural resources awareness

Position Requirements

Minimum Basic Requirements for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials:

  • Must have at least a Master’s of Art degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Archaeology, or an equivalent degree with an emphasis in archaeology
  • Must have completed a degree that included three (3) semester hours in EACH of the following course areas:
  • History of Archaeology
  • Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America
  • Regional Archaeology, Archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area such as the Mojave Desert or Great Basin to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development
  • Theory and methods of Archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, and analytical techniques
  • Six (6) semester hours of related course work in:
    • Geography, Geology, or Cultural Geography;
    • History, Historiography, or Historical Archaeology;
    • Environmental studies;
    • Scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or Surveying.
    • AND Completion of an archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work in North America
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Archaeological survey and/or excavation
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Standards and Guidelines as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations - 36 CFR Part 61
  • Candidates for this position must be able to work in changing physical conditions:
    • In extreme climatic conditions and rapidly changing temperatures;
    • Must be able walk over long distances and across of variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces;
    • Must be able to climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl;
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs across a distance of as much as 30 yards;
    • Must be able to work with minimal supervision;
    • Must be able to use GPS technology, read maps, and be skilled in North American compliance Archaeological techniques and practices

Additional Basic Requirements for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials:

  • Working knowledge of The Antiquities Act; the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA); the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA); the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA); Curation of Federally Owned and Administered Archaeological Collections (36 CFR 79); and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, for example, by authoring reports of survey, excavation, artifact analysis, or method and theory
  • Well-developed verbal and technical report writing skills
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Strong working knowledge of GIS computer software
  • Upon hiring the applicant must be able to pass a federal background check required prior to gaining access to unclassified government computer work stations
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a standard California Driver's License; candidate may be required to operate a government-owned motor vehicle safely
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with the Department of Defense (DoD)
  • Experience working in the Mojave Desert and Great Basin and the ability to work extended hours in various weather conditions
  • Experience navigating and collecting data using GSP technology
