Job Summary:

The Head of Publications oversees the publications program of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, a museum dedicated to the arts and sciences of motion pictures-past, present, and future. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Content and Programming, this position manages an active publications program consisting of all printed materials related to the collection and exhibitions of the museum while leading the staff in the publications department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of all phases of conceptualization, editing, image procurement, and production for all museum catalogues and publications.
  • Work closely with Deputy Director, Content and Programming as well as curators and external constituents, as appropriate, on the development of the publications strategy and concept for each publication.
  • Establish and oversee budgets and timelines for each publication, working in close collaboration with the Deputy Director, Content and Programming and the Director, Exhibition Planning and Coordination.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts for co-publications, author, editor, designer, printers, and others, as needed.
  • Work with publishers, authors, designers, and printers to co-publish and/or independently produce museum publications.
  • Oversee research and procurement of photographs; rights and reproduction issues in conjunction with museum clearance staff; editing, copyediting, and proofreading of manuscripts; managing design, printing, binding, shipping, and distribution of publications.
  • Research and maintain contacts with appropriate publishers, printers, designers, suppliers, and others relevant to publication needs.
  • Achieve highest technical quality possible for each project within budget and time constraints.
  • Oversee inventory, storage, sales to museum store, and internal distribution of museum publications.
  • Oversee schedule and editing and collaborate with exhibits department on production of museum exhibition didactics.
  • Write and/or edit advancement and marketing print and digital materials as well as materials for the director's office and board, as required.
  • Ensure that the tone of each publication is appropriate to the museum's mission and strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Supervise the publications staff, including setting goals, performing reviews, and daily management. Supervises contract designers, editors, printers, and other external vendors, as required.
  • Ensure smooth, collegial, and efficient communication and work flow between the publications department and other museum departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with major publishers as well as editors, designers, printers, and other vendors relevant for publication needs.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience editing and overseeing production of a wide range of museum publications, including labels, wall texts, brochures, single- and multi-author catalogues and publications.
  • Excellent knowledge of copyright regulations and policies.
  • Excellent editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively across departments and with a range of personalities and individuals.
