Capital Project Delivery Process Engineering Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Management for an internship during the summer of 2018. This internship opportunity is with the Global Engineering and Real Estate department.


  • The primary goal is to supplement the academic curriculum currently being undertaken, while gaining professional experience applying the knowledge to help engage and foster collaborative thought within the existing Global Engineering & Real Estate (GERE) team.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the core business process utilized by AstraZeneca to successfully execute large capital projects ($10MM+) by learning, following and applying the core processes to plan, execute, control and administer capital projects within the Global Engineering & Real Estate (GERE) remit.
  • Engage in a positive way to help foster a multi-cultural, inclusive model that encourages collaboration, understanding and inclusiveness to help drive to a common goal.
  • Hone the ability to connect with people and build trust to develop strong networking / mentoring relationships within the Global Engineering Project Management Industry. This position will be key in helping gather, prepare and deliver data to help executive leadership make decisions related to projects and stakeholder engagement.
  • Understand and learn to represent the core AZ behaviors to enable an effective attitude and collaborative team environment.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist with development of Capital Project Delivery Process content as part of cross-functional continuous improvement team.
  • Coordinate with Real Estate and Master Planning organizations to document processes and align terminology with the capital Project Delivery Process Model
  • Collaborate with various Knowledge Area Owners to review and develop capital project tools, templates, & guidelines designed to simplify and standardize project practices and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Be a member of a team comprised of leaders within the Global Project Execution Organization identified to improve and expand on our existing Project Execution Plan (PEP).
  • Build and present presentations related to work in-progress and completed action items and improvements
  • Ensure SharePoint information is kept up to date and coordinated with Knowledge Area Owners
  • Engage with Global Engineering Leadership Team
  • Attend Global Engineering & Real Estate (GERE) Engineering Council review meetings. The Engineering Council is the GERE governing body ensuring compliance to the Capital Project Delivery Process and quality of Engineering deliverables

  • Significant experience with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, etc.)
  • Knowledge of and ability to work within SharePoint online preferred
  • Extremely organized and results driven
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Inquisitive mind set with developed critical / analytical abilities
  • Proactive with high levels of self-motivation and personal accountability, bringing enthusiasm and energy to team, peer group and tasks
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Undergraduate Junior, Seniors
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0+
