Description

The Sustainable Water Partnership (SWP) supports the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) thought leadership, innovation and action in global water security. SWP is implemented by a consortium of organizations led by Winrock International, together with Tetra Tech, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), World Resources Institute (WRI), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), CEO Water Mandate, and mWater.

SWP seeks to recruit a part-time Project Coordinator for an upcoming collaborative applied research effort aimed at improving the management of transboundary groundwater resources in South Africa and neighboring countries

The Project Coordinator will report to the SWP Director at Winrock, while working closely on a regular basis with the WRC, funders, research grant recipients and students. The successful applicant for the Project Coordinator position will not be eligible to compete for the research grants, and will be required to sign a non-disclosure acknowledgement.

DUTIES

  • Technical support of the research grant process (review of grant proposals; overseeing grant implementation), as appropriate and requested by USAID and WRC

  • Assist in the definition of information needs for policy/decision makers, of needed data to be collected and analyzed, and of display tools (such as maps, graphs) to be produced

  • Support to grantees to generate work plans for the award period that include definition of clear goals, targets, deliverables, and timelines in line with their own Terms of Reference and with the overall information and display goals

  • Facilitate the creation of a community of practice through coordination of partner organizations and grantees along with the convening of a wider group of stakeholders

  • Organize meetings, working groups, workshops, and technical trainings in coordination with USGS, IBM and USAID, over the entire period of performance to ensure coordination, progress, and capacity-building

  • Definition of clear communication and reporting mechanisms among partner organizations, grantees, and stakeholders to ensure coordination and progress

  • Rapid review of data collection, analyses, and of information being produced

  • Coordination of IBM's student intern outputs to maximize cross-learning amongst grantees and community of practice

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

A Master's degree or above in water resource management, hydrogeology or a related field, plus:

  • At least 10 years work experience in development assistance, preferably on water related issues

  • An understanding of data information systems and digital tools, and how they can be used to disseminate environmental and hydrological data to improve decision making related to water resource management

  • An understanding of satellite and other remote sensing systems related to water data

  • Knowledge of, and/or experience working with, big data analytics is highly desirable

  • Experience working on USAID activities or with similar donor organizations

  • Experience working in South Africa on water security issues and on policy formulation

  • Experience supporting coordination of different organizations with diverse mandates

  • Excellent inter-personal and communications skills (writing and speaking) in English

LOCATION

The assignment is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

LEVEL OF EFFORT

Part time (30-40%) for 18 months
