Intern: MedImmune Analytical Biotechnology Analytical Biochemistry Intern Location: Gaithersburg, MD MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca, a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule and biologic prescription medicines. MedImmune is pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas, including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; oncology; neuroscience; and infection and vaccines. We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry or related major for an internship during the summer of 2018. This internship opportunity is with the Analytical Biotechnology department. This intern will work in a laboratory observing or performing analytical experiments utilizing chromatographic, spectroscopic and mass spectrometry methods to help our group with method development. This work addresses the analytical challenge to accurately quantitate B- series vitamins, vitamin B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Nicotinamide), B9 (Folic Acid), B12 (Cyanocobalamin), B6 – PMP (Pyridoxamine-5-phosphate), B6 – PM (Pyridoxamine dihydrochloride), B6 – PL (Pyridoxal hydrochloride), and B6 – PN (Pyridoxine hydrochloride) in cell culture media and cell culture feed samples. This work will focus on a new chromatography method utilizing a ACQUITY QDa Mass Detector to resolve sample matrix challenges and low detection limit of analytes. Core Responsibilities: The intern will be trained and will learn basic skills in chemistry, biology and analytical biochemistry. He/she will work in a laboratory observing or performing analytical experiments utilizing chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. He/she will assist in the analysis of biological samples to support analytical method optimization needs of the process groups, under the guidance of a supervisor. The candidate will read, understand, train on, and follow relevant laboratory SOPs. The candidate will obtain a general picture about the interaction of the various groups within the Analytical department. The candidate will learn the importance of different group’s interactions in the successful advancement of a protein therapeutic drug discovery. The candidate will make detailed experimental observations, review and analyze data, and interpret experimental results. The candidate will need to present and discuss experimental results at group/project team meetings |
Position Requirements: Adequate theoretical and/or technical understanding of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques in protein analysis is preferred. Familiarity with size exclusion, affinity, reversed phase, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatographic methods is preferred. Strong interpersonal skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills are essential. - Basic laboratory experience
- Undergraduate Junior, Seniors
- Minimum GPA of 3.0+
